A sudden, suffocating silence fell over the auditorium. The smirks on the faces of the popular boys in the front row vanished, replaced by a confused, defensive stillness.

"Nineteen years ago," Liam said, his gaze shifting upward toward the balcony, locking directly onto my position with a profound, unblinking clarity that made the breath leave my lungs, "a fifteen-year-old girl sat in her high school counselor's office in this very town. She was the top student in her class. She was on track to become valedictorian. She had a scholarship to Stanford waiting for her. But then she discovered she was pregnant."

My heart stopped beating. The vinyl under my fingers felt freezing cold as the memories I had spent nearly two decades burying inside the dark corners of my mind rushed back with a violent, dizzying force.

"Her parents couldn't accept the reality," Liam’s voice trembled slightly, but he caught himself, his grip tightening on the podium. "They gave her an ultimatum: terminate the pregnancy or leave the house. The boy who had promised to love her forever vanished from the county lines the same afternoon. So, at fifteen years old, with nothing but a single suitcase and a heart full of terrifying uncertainty, she walked out into the world alone. She gave up her valedictorian track. She gave up her Stanford scholarship. She took a minimum-wage job at a local diner, working twelve-hour shifts on her feet while her ankles swelled, just to ensure that when I was born, I would have a crib and a roof over my head."
