Someone had walked through his home while he slept.
Someone had gone to the balcony.
And Nora had ended up below.
“I don’t know,” Liam whispered.
The officer’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t know?”
Liam looked down at his hands.
His fingers were still cold from touching the balcony lock.
“I made her sleep outside,” he said.
The courtyard went silent.
Even the neighbors stopped whispering.
The officer stared at him.
“You what?”
Liam swallowed.
“My sister said Nora was stealing from me. I found transfers. I got angry. I locked her on the balcony.”
Mrs. Alvarez gasped from behind him.
The paramedics lifted Nora carefully onto the stretcher. Her head turned slightly, and for one terrible second, her eyes opened.
They did not search for Liam.
They stared right through him.
Then she whispered one word.
