He only remembered the sound of his own breathing tearing through his throat and the horrible image below the balcony, that white shape beside the bare winter tree, still against the frozen ground.

“Nora!”

His voice cracked so badly it hardly sounded human.

The building’s back door slammed open behind him as he stumbled into the courtyard in bare feet, not feeling the concrete, not feeling the ice, not feeling anything except a terror so complete it hollowed him out.

The white shape was Nora’s coat.

For one impossible second, relief hit him so hard his knees nearly failed.

Then he saw her.

She was a few feet away, half-hidden behind the tree trunk, curled on her side in the wet grass, one arm tucked under her chest, her dark hair spread across the ground like spilled ink. Her nightgown was soaked. One slipper was missing. Her lips looked faintly blue in the courtyard light.
