That night I barely slept.

Ryan came to bed around eleven.

He kissed my forehead.

Asked if I was okay.

Told me I looked tired.

I stared at him in the darkness.

Trying to see something I had missed.

Trying to find some sign.

Any sign.

But he looked exactly the same.

The same face.

The same calm voice.

The same man I thought I knew.

The next morning Lily refused to leave my side.

While I packed her lunch, she stood beside me.

While I folded laundry, she followed me.

When Ryan entered the kitchen she physically moved behind me.

Not dramatically.

Not obviously.

Just enough.

Just enough for me to notice.

Ryan frowned.

"Everything okay, peanut?"

Lily wouldn't answer.

His smile flickered.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

But I saw it.

For the first time, I saw it.

Something beneath the mask.

Something irritated.

Something angry.

That afternoon I called her school counselor.

The counselor listened carefully.

Then asked a question I wasn't prepared for.

"Has anyone recently gained unsupervised access to your daughter?"

The answer hit me immediately.

Ryan.

Eight months.

Eight months of opportunities.

Eight months of trust.

Eight months of moments I wasn't there.

I suddenly remembered things I'd ignored.

The nightmares.

The bedwetting.

The sudden fear of being alone.

The stomachaches before coming home from school.

The way she checked whether Ryan was nearby before speaking.

The way she stopped singing.

Stopped laughing.

Stopped being herself.
