“You protected it,” Natalie whispered, tears instantly blurring her vision. “You held onto it for four days.”

Andrew’s eyes, filled with a primal, desperate terror, shifted weakly toward the stairs, then back to Natalie. He let out a strained, panicked noise, trying to communicate the warning he had failed to finish on the kitchen table.

Do not trust...

“Who did this to you, Andrew?” Natalie pleaded, pressing a gauze pad from her tactical kit against his head wound. “Who chased you?”

Before he could answer, his eyes rolled back, and his body went limp. He had held onto life purely out of the agonizing need to get this medicine to his little girl. Now that a cop had it, his body surrendered.
