Rachel’s voice echoed down the sterile hospital corridor, light and breathless, as if she were apologizing for being late to a PTA meeting rather than arriving at a pediatric trauma unit.

"Where is my stepdaughter? I need to explain before Jack hears it wrong!"

The sound of her voice—a sound I had once associated with order, comfort, and the smooth running of my household—now hit me like a physical blow. I looked down at Emily. The moment Rachel’s voice pierced the room, my eight-year-old daughter’s entire body went rigid. The heart monitor beside her bed spiked, the rhythmic beeping accelerating into a frantic, panicked tempo. Emily squeezed her eyes shut, her small shoulders rising toward her ears as if trying to shield herself from an invisible strike.
