Hannah did not answer the door when Ethan arrived at her Oak Brook townhouse three days later, though he could hear movement inside, the muffled sound of a television and, briefly, one of the twins' voices asking a question he couldn't quite make out.
He knocked again, more carefully this time.
"Hannah," he called, "I know I have no right to simply show up here. I just need five minutes. Please."
