Part of my healing.

The valley was quiet then.

About forty homes scattered across twelve hundred acres.

Veterans.

Retirees.

Artists.

Farmers.

People who had escaped the noise of modern life.

It was exactly what Sarah had wanted.

Then Derek High Tower arrived.

And peace disappeared.

 The High Towers

Derek High Tower called himself a developer.

He purchased a large piece of land and announced plans for Pines Vista Estates.

Twelve luxury houses.

Each one looked completely out of place.

Glass walls.

Steel beams.

Massive driveways.

Private hot tubs.

Homes that cost more than many families' entire lives.

Then came Brenda.

She was worse.

Within six months, she had created the valley's first homeowners association.

And somehow, she became its president.

Her first target was Walt Kowalski.

Walt was seventy-eight and owned a battered 1987 Chevrolet pickup.

Brenda claimed the truck damaged property values.

Then she went after Elena Santos.

Elena grew tomatoes beside her house.

Brenda declared the garden "inappropriate for a residential community."

Then she noticed me.

My property sat at the highest point in the valley.

Brenda could see my cabin from her floor-to-ceiling windows.

Every morning she watched me split wood.

Every afternoon she saw me working in my furniture shop.

Every weekend she watched me ride my ATV.

I was living the exact kind of mountain life she had supposedly come here to enjoy.

She hated it.

The complaints began.

Noise violations.

Unsightly storage.

Unauthorized business activity.

Then came a certified letter demanding $500 per day in fines.

I read it twice.

Then I laughed.

I had purchased my land in 2021.

The HOA didn't even exist until two years later.

I called Brenda.

"Brenda, I don't belong to your HOA."

Her voice became cold.

"You will follow community standards."

"I don't live in your community."

"Everyone here does."

"No."

I paused.

"This is my property."

Her mask finally disappeared.

"Listen here, you backwoods redneck. We're going to civilize this place whether you like it or not."

I hung up.

That was the moment I realized something.

This wasn't about firewood.

It wasn't about property values.

It was about control.

And Brenda had just declared war on a man who knew how to fight patiently.

The First Signs of the Real Plan

Two weeks later, an expensive law firm sent me a cease-and-desist letter.

Kensington and Associates.

Three pages of legal intimidation.

They claimed my woodworking business was damaging property values.

They demanded that I stop.

They threatened a lawsuit exceeding $50,000.

Attached were forty-seven photographs of my property.

My woodshed.

My solar panels.

My mailbox.

My workshop.

I made coffee.

Then I went to the county law library.

Twenty years in the Air Force had taught me something important.

Never panic when someone gives you paperwork.

Read it.

Understand it.

Then find the regulation they forgot.

Three days later, I sent their lawyers a one-page response explaining why my activities were legally protected.
