Sunday mornings in Elmwood Estates were usually so quiet that people could hear the sprinklers clicking beneath the hedges.

The neighborhood sat in one of the most carefully maintained corners of Bethesda, Maryland. Tall trees lined the streets. Stone walls surrounded enormous properties. Every lawn seemed freshly cut, every driveway spotless, and every mailbox polished.

For most residents, Sunday meant sleeping late, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, and forgetting about the outside world for a few hours.

For Arthur Pendleton, it was the closest thing he had to a vacation.

At fifty-eight, Arthur had spent more than three decades in federal law enforcement. His career had taken him through dangerous investigations, international intelligence operations, congressional hearings, terrorist threats, and classified briefings that could never be discussed outside secure rooms.

He was currently the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

But that morning, none of that mattered to him.

There were no cameras following him. No reporters waited at the gate. No aides stood nearby with folders. His government-issued phone was sitting inside the house.

Arthur had deliberately left it there.

He wore old gray sweatpants, a faded Georgetown sweatshirt, and white sneakers that had seen better days. His silver hair was slightly untidy. In one hand he carried a garden hose. In the other, he had just retrieved the Sunday newspaper from his mailbox.

For a few precious minutes, Arthur was simply a man at home.

He smiled when he noticed that one of his hydrangeas had finally begun blooming.

Then he heard the police cruiser.

It moved slowly down the street.

Inside were Officer Derek Rollins and Officer Greg Miller.

Rollins was young, ambitious, and convinced that the fastest way to advance his career was to make arrests that attracted attention.

Miller had been in the department much longer. He had learned that not every unusual situation was a crime and that sometimes the best police work involved knowing when to leave people alone.

As the cruiser passed Arthur's property, Rollins slowed down.

"Hold on," he said.

Miller looked up.

"What?"

Rollins pointed toward the driveway.

"That guy."

Miller looked through the windshield.

Arthur was standing beside the mailbox.

"He's getting his newspaper."

"I know what he's doing."

"Then why are you staring at him?"

Rollins didn't answer immediately.

His eyes traveled from Arthur to the enormous house behind him.

"Something doesn't look right."

Miller sighed.

"Derek."

"What?"

"Keep driving."

Rollins ignored him.

The cruiser stopped.

Arthur noticed the vehicle and waited.

When Rollins stepped out, Arthur gave him a polite nod.

"Good morning, officer."

Rollins didn't return the greeting.

"Step away from the mailbox."

Arthur looked at the mailbox.

Then at Rollins.

"I'm sorry?"

"I said step away."

Arthur placed the newspaper under his arm.

"I'm standing on my own property."

"Identification."

Arthur remained calm.

"My identification is inside."

"Then go get it."

Arthur glanced toward the house.

"I would be happy to."

"You aren't going anywhere."

Miller had now stepped out of the cruiser.

"Derek, what's the issue?"

Rollins ignored him.

"Whose house is this?"

Arthur stared at him for a moment.

"Mine."

Rollins gave a short laugh.

"Your name?"

"Arthur Pendleton."

Something about Rollins's expression changed.

Not recognition.

Disbelief.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Arthur's eyes narrowed slightly.

"I don't expect you to believe anything. I expect you to verify it."

"That's not how this works."

"Actually, it is."

Miller stepped closer.

"Sir, do you have any identification on you?"

"No. I was watering my garden."

Arthur pointed toward the hose.

Miller looked at it.

The explanation made perfect sense.

Rollins, however, seemed increasingly convinced that he had discovered something suspicious.
