Samuel stood up slowly, adjusting his glasses and buttoning his tweed suit jacket. He was sixty-two years old, a legendary defense attorney whose sharp mind was hidden behind a grandfatherly demeanor. He walked to the wooden podium in the center of the room, holding a single sheet of paper. He looked at Mercer for a long, quiet moment before speaking. "Detective Mercer, you testified that you observed Ms. Carter carrying the manila envelope as she walked toward her vehicle, correct?" "Yes, sir, that's correct," Mercer answered smoothly. "And you testified that your body camera was fully operational throughout the entire encounter?" "Yes. The footage has already been entered into evidence as Exhibit C."

"Indeed it has," Samuel said, walking over to the defense table and retrieving a small black remote control. He pointed it at the large flat-screen monitor mounted on the courtroom wall. "Let's review Exhibit C together, Detective. Specifically, let's look at the timestamp at twenty-one hundred hours and fourteen minutes, precisely twenty seconds before you initiated physical contact with my client." The screen flickered to life, showing the grainy, rain-streaked wide-angle perspective of Mercer's body camera. The audio was distorted by the heavy rain, but the visual was clear enough: Mercer was walking rapidly toward Evelyn's car, his left hand holding a heavy flashlight, while his right hand was positioned near his belt.

Samuel paused the video. "Detective Mercer, where is the manila envelope in this frame? Ms. Carter is still inside her vehicle with the doors closed. You have not reached her car yet. But if we look closely at your right hand—the hand holding your tactical flashlight—what is tucked tightly beneath your armpit?" Samuel pressed the zoom button, enlarging the image by two hundred percent. The pixelated image sharpened, revealing the distinct, dark outline of a thick manila envelope tucked firmly under Mercer's right arm, pressed against his tactical vest, long before he ever opened Evelyn's car door.

A sudden, sharp silence descended upon the courtroom. Prosecutor Vance immediately leapt to his feet, his chair screeching violently against the floorboards. "Objection, Your Honor! Defense counsel is asking the witness to speculate on low-resolution, pixelated video artifacting!" "Overruled," Judge Helen Montgomery stated firmly, leaning forward over her high marble bench, her eyes fixed intently on the screen. "The witness will answer the question. Detective Mercer, what is depicted under your arm in that frame?" Mercer’s jaw clenched tightly. The unshakeable confidence that had defined his posture for two days showed its very first hairline crack. His throat cleared audibly into the microphone. "It appears to be a clipboard or a tactical notepad, Your Honor. We carry standard field paperwork during night patrols."

"A tactical notepad?" Samuel asked softly, walking closer to the witness stand. "A tactical notepad that happens to possess the exact dimensions, color, and metal clasp layout as Exhibit A—the very envelope you claimed under oath my client brought to that garage?" Mercer glared at Samuel, his eyes darkening. "I know what I saw that night, counselor. The defendant had the stolen documents. She was meeting an informant to trade classified department files." "Is that so?" Samuel responded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, rhythmic cadence. "Then let us discuss this supposed informant, Detective. Let us discuss Mr. Marcus Bell."
