Veronica felt something cold settle in her chest.

This wasn't a misunderstanding.

It wasn't confusion.

The officer wanted control.

And he was willing to create a confrontation to get it.

That was when Veronica realized something else.

The badge did not frighten her.

The gun did.

Because she knew exactly how little it took for an encounter like this to turn deadly.

And Kars was standing with one hand only inches from his weapon.

Veronica slowly released the door handle.

"Officer Kars," she said, "let's slow this down."

He smiled without humor.

"No."

And somewhere in the darkness behind them, another set of headlights appeared.

A Badge and a Gun

The second patrol car approached slowly.

Veronica watched it through the windshield.

For the briefest moment, relief crossed her mind.

Another officer meant another witness.

Another set of eyes.

Another chance for someone to recognize that this situation was spiraling.

But that relief disappeared almost immediately.

The second officer stepped out.

He was tall and broad-shouldered.

Unlike Kars, he did not appear rushed.

He walked toward them with the calm confidence of someone who believed he already understood what had happened.

Kars glanced at him.

"Problem here?"

"Non-compliant driver."

Veronica turned her head.

"That's not accurate."

The second officer looked at her.

"Ma'am, step out of the vehicle."

Veronica almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the absurdity of the situation had reached another level.

"I have complied with every request that has been lawfully made."

"Step out."

"I've provided my license."

"Step out."

"I've identified myself."

"Step out."

Neither man seemed interested in what she was saying.

Veronica slowly opened the driver's door.

She stepped onto the pavement.

The cold air immediately struck her face.

Kars positioned himself several feet away.

The second officer stood behind him.

Veronica kept both hands visible.

"Now," she said, "I'd like to know why I'm being detained."

Kars pointed toward the road.

"Suspicious behavior."

"What behavior?"

He shrugged.

"You know what you were doing."

"No, Officer. I don't."

His eyes narrowed.

"You want to keep arguing?"

"No. I want to understand."

"Turn around."

Veronica did not move.

"Officer Kars, I am requesting your name and badge number."

"You already know my name."

"I'd like your badge number."

"Turn around."

She looked toward the patrol car.

Its dashboard camera was pointed toward them.

For a moment, she felt reassured.

At least there was a record.

Then Kars stepped forward.

He grabbed her wrist.

His fingers closed around it hard.

Veronica immediately pulled back.

"Get your hands off me."

"I'm telling you to turn around."

"You are hurting me."

The second officer stepped closer.

"We got a problem?"

Kars tightened his grip.

"She's resisting."

Veronica stared at him.

"No. I'm not."

"Stop resisting."

"I'm standing still."

The second officer reached for his radio.

Veronica's pulse accelerated.

She knew where this was going.

She had read the reports.

She had watched the videos.

She knew the language.

Non-compliant.

Resisting.

Aggressive.

Threatening.

Words that could transform a frightened citizen into a supposed danger within seconds.

The second officer raised his radio.

"Dispatch, we have a non-compliant suspect—"

"Don't call me a suspect," Veronica said.

Kars looked at her.

"Turn around."

"No."

His hand moved toward his weapon.

Everything seemed to freeze.

Veronica saw his thumb.

The movement of his wrist.

The shift in his shoulders.

She knew what was coming before he drew.

The weapon appeared.

The barrel pointed directly at her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Veronica's hands slowly rose.

Palms open.

Her training took over.

Do not make sudden movements.

Do not reach.

Do not argue.

Stay calm.

Breathe.

Kars's face was only a few feet away.

"Do you feel powerful now?" he asked.

Veronica looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

Her voice was surprisingly steady.

"I feel disappointed."

His expression changed.

"Watch yourself."

"No," Veronica replied. "You watch yourself."

The second officer glanced at Kars.

Something had changed.

Perhaps he finally understood how serious the situation had become.

Perhaps he realized the person standing before them wasn't an ordinary driver.

Or perhaps he was simply afraid.

Then a voice came from the roadside.

"Hey!"

Everyone turned slightly.

A man stood near the edge of the road.

He held up his phone.

"I'm recording this!"

Kars's eyes snapped toward him.

The man's voice remained steady.

"Everything is on camera."

The second officer shifted.

Kars's weapon remained raised.

But his confidence had changed.

Veronica could see it.

The hesitation.

The calculation.

The sudden realization that the darkness was no longer protecting him.

He had believed this was going to happen without witnesses.
