“I don't see how that's relevant either.”
He smiled coldly.
“Simple question.”
Diana's patience began to disappear.
“I am requesting that you verify the reservation with the airline.”
“We'll verify it after we search your belongings.”
“You don't have my consent to search them.”
Morrison's expression hardened.
“Don't make this difficult.”
“I am not making anything difficult. I'm asking you to follow proper procedure.”
Several passengers had stopped walking.
Phones appeared.
Morrison noticed.
Good.
The humiliation was becoming public.
The Arrest
“Open the briefcase,” Morrison ordered.
Diana didn't move.
“I will not consent to an unlawful search.”
Morrison turned toward another officer.
“Search it.”
The briefcase was opened.
Court documents spilled across the counter.
A federal court directory.
Legal briefs.
Family photographs.
Medication bearing Diana's name.
Morrison picked up a folder.
“What is this?”
“Federal court documents.”
He laughed.
“Looks like fake government paperwork to me.”
A woman nearby shook her head.
“Those look pretty real to me.”
Morrison turned.
“Ma'am, step back.”
The woman kept recording.
“This is wrong.”
Diana's voice remained controlled.
“Officer Morrison, you have no probable cause to detain me.”
Morrison's face reddened.
“Turn around.”
“Under what statute?”
“Turn around now.”
“Officer, I am warning you that you are violating my constitutional rights.”
That was when Morrison reached for his handcuffs.
The terminal erupted.
“Are you serious?” someone shouted.
“Let her go!”
“I'm recording this!”
Diana remained still.
Morrison grabbed her wrist.
The cuffs clicked shut.
Then he leaned toward her ear.
“You should have cooperated.”
Diana looked at the cameras surrounding them.
She understood something immediately.
This wasn't an investigation.
It was a performance.
Someone wanted this recorded.
Someone wanted her humiliated.
And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure she couldn't simply walk away.
The Name Behind the Badge
Morrison tightened the handcuffs.
“You're under arrest.”
Diana took a slow breath.
Then she spoke quietly.
“Officer Morrison, badge number 4471.”
He paused.
“You have just arrested Judge Diana Washington.”
His expression changed.
“I already heard you.”
“No,” Diana said. “You didn't understand me.”
She turned slightly so the cameras could see her face.
“I am a sitting federal judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.”
A murmur spread through the terminal.
Someone whispered, “Oh my God.”
The college student's live stream exploded.
The elderly woman holding her phone stared at Diana.
“They arrested a federal judge?”
Morrison's face went pale.
“I—I didn't know.”
“That is not a defense.”
One of the officers stepped away.
“Jake,” he whispered, “we need to stop.”
Morrison looked at him.
“Shut up.”
Diana continued.
“I have served on the federal bench for twenty years. I have presided over thousands of cases. Two weeks ago, I issued a ruling involving one of the largest corporations in the country.”
