"That isn't the point."

Denise kept her voice calm.

"You haven't told me what I'm accused of."

Miller stepped closer.

"We believe merchandise may have been taken."

Denise looked at the jewelry case.

"Then tell me what is missing."

Silence.

That silence told her more than any answer could have.

She had been watching the employees carefully.

Nobody had actually seen her take anything.

Nobody had identified a missing item.

Nobody had even asked what she had supposedly stolen.

This was not an investigation.

It was an accusation.

And Denise knew exactly how dangerous accusations could become when people stopped caring about facts.

"Call the police if you believe a crime occurred," she said.

Miller smiled.

"We already did."

A cold feeling moved through Denise's stomach.

"How convenient."

Within minutes, a uniformed officer entered the store.

Denise recognized him.

James Reigns.

She had seen his name in department reports.

She had never worked directly with him, but she knew enough to know that Reigns had a reputation for escalating situations.

He looked at Miller.

Then at Denise.

Then at the purse.

"What's going on?"

Miller explained.

Reigns nodded.

"Ma'am, open the bag."

Denise stared at him.

"Officer, I haven't stolen anything."

"Then this will be easy."

"I agree. So tell me what you're accusing me of."

Reigns took another step forward.

"We can do this the easy way."

Denise almost laughed.

The phrase was familiar.

Too familiar.

"Officer, I am asking you to explain the specific allegation."

Reigns's expression hardened.

"You don't get to give me instructions."

"No," Denise replied quietly. "But I do get to ask what crime you believe occurred."

Davis looked at the floor.

Miller folded his arms.

Reigns reached toward Denise's purse.

She stepped back.

"Don't touch my property."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

People outside the store began watching.

Someone lifted a phone.

Reigns's jaw tightened.

"Turn around."

Denise stared at him.

"For what?"

"You're being detained."

"On what grounds?"

"Suspicion of theft."

Denise looked directly into his eyes.

"Then document everything."

Reigns grabbed her wrist.

Davis immediately spoke.

"Officer—"

"Stay out of it."

Denise felt the familiar pressure of authority being used without restraint.

She had spent her career teaching officers that control was not the same thing as force.

Apparently Reigns had missed that lesson.

He pulled her arms behind her.

The handcuffs clicked.

The crowd outside became louder.

Denise closed her eyes for half a second.

She could have ended this immediately.

She could have announced her rank.

She could have demanded a supervisor.

But she wanted to know something first.

Why had they chosen her?

And why did Reigns seem so certain she would be treated as guilty?

As Reigns led her toward the exit, Denise finally spoke.

"Officer."

"What?"

"You should ask who you're arresting before you finish this."

He laughed.

"You're a shoplifter. That's who."

Denise looked over her shoulder.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You just haven't discovered who I am yet."

The walk through Greenwood Mall felt longer than it should have.

Denise could feel hundreds of eyes following her.

Some people whispered.

Others recorded.

A little boy pointed toward her, and his mother quickly pulled his hand down.

Denise kept her head high.

She had escorted countless suspects through public spaces during her career.

She knew exactly what humiliation was supposed to accomplish.

Make the person feel powerless.

Make them angry.

Make them react.

Then the reaction becomes evidence.

But Denise refused to give Reigns that satisfaction.

At the mall's side entrance, Reigns stopped.

"Put her in the car."

Miller nodded.

Davis hesitated.

"Officer Reigns..."

"What?"

"I don't think—"

"Don't think. Do your job."

Davis looked at Denise.

For the first time, their eyes met directly.

Denise saw fear.

Not fear of her.

Fear of Reigns.

That mattered.

Before Reigns could open the patrol car door, Denise spoke loudly enough for the crowd to hear.
