"Is that right?" Kavanaugh stepped in closer, his heavy breath hot against the back of Darius's neck as he lowered his voice. "Then why do you look like every other suspect we’ve hauled in this week?"

There it was. Bare. Ugly. Unfiltered. They weren't even attempting to dress their corruption up in the polite euphemisms of police work anymore.

"You’re profiling me," Darius said calmly, his voice level and chillingly controlled. "And you’re doing it so badly, you didn’t even run the paperwork before deciding you’d try to make an example out of me."

"Paperwork's got errors," Heller snapped from inside the car, speaking a little too fast to sound convincing. "That’s on you."

Darius began to systematically deconstruct their operation, speaking clearly into the evening air.

  • "I watched you take photos of the VIN and the tags through my rearview mirror before you even approached the window."

  • "I saw the reflection of a flatbed tow truck pulling into position at the end of the block before either of you made a radio call for dispatch."

  • "You haven't keyed your radio once to run my plates through the NCIC database."

"Either this is the most incompetent standard procedure I've ever witnessed," Darius continued, his voice dropping into a deadly, precise register, "or you’re working for someone who's running a seizure racket. And you just flagged my car for theft."

Kavanaugh moved around to the front of the car, stepping directly into Darius's line of sight. His face was entirely too close, his expression curdled with aggressive challenge. "What the hell did you just say?"

"I said you are not in control of this situation. Not even a little bit."

Kavanaugh shoved him hard against the hood. The move was all brute aggression, entirely devoid of professionalism. The sudden jolt rattled Darius’s bones, echoing through his chest, but he didn’t cry out. He didn't even flinch. Behind his back, his cuffed fingers tensed into tight fists, then slowly, deliberately relaxed.

"Watch your mouth," Kavanaugh growled, spittle flying from his lips. "You think that tone’s going to help you out here? You act like you’re better than us. Like you deserve something."

"I do," Darius said. And for the first time that evening, a cold, unmistakable trace of steel entered his voice. "I deserve not to be stripped, searched, and humiliated on the side of the street for owning a car I earned. But more importantly, I deserve to finish my job."

Heller emerged from the car, holding the sealed manila envelope Darius had left on the passenger seat. "Hey, Kev. Look at this. Guy's riding around with unmarked packages. Probably moving weight."

"Open it," Darius commanded. It wasn't a suggestion. It was an order from a superior officer, delivered with such absolute authority that Heller subconsciously obeyed before his ego could stop him.

Heller tore the top of the envelope. He reached inside, expecting cash, or perhaps contraband. Instead, he pulled out a thick stack of glossy photographs and a federal dossier bound with a blue clip.

Heller’s smirk vanished instantly. The color drained from his face as he stared at the top photograph. It was a crystal-clear, long-lens surveillance shot of Kavanaugh and Heller standing in an alleyway behind a chop shop, accepting a thick manila envelope from a known cartel associate.

"What is this?" Heller whispered, his voice trembling as he thumbed to the next page—a printed ledger of offshore bank accounts, routing numbers, and the exact VINs of the last twenty cars they had illegally seized.

Kavanaugh noticed his partner's panic. "Heller, what is it?"

"It's us, Kev," Heller breathed, looking up at Darius with sudden, unadulterated terror. "It's everything."

Darius finally turned his head, locking eyes with Kavanaugh. The older cop’s resting scowl had fractured into a mask of dawning horror.

"My name is Darius Cole," he said, his voice carrying the immovable weight of a collapsing mountain. "I’m a Senior Investigator with the Department of Homeland Security, Anti-Corruption Task Force. For the last eight months, I’ve been dismantling the digital infrastructure of the laundering ring you two idiots have been using to hide your stolen assets."

Kavanaugh took a step back, his hand dropping instinctively toward his sidearm, but freezing as he realized the fatal magnitude of his situation.

"That envelope," Darius continued, nodding toward the papers trembling in Heller's hands, "contains the final sealed indictments. The ones signed by a federal judge this morning. I was just taking a drive to clear my head before I turned them over to the FBI field office." Darius offered a cold, humorless smile. "But since you boys were so eager to do some police work today, you just saved me the trip."

As if on cue, the quiet hum of the summer evening was shattered. It wasn't the wail of police sirens, but the heavy, synchronized roar of three matte-black SUVs turning the corner at the end of the block. They accelerated rapidly, tires squealing against the hot asphalt, completely boxing in the police cruiser and the Aston Martin.

Doors flew open before the vehicles even came to a complete stop. A dozen men and women wearing tactical vests emblazoned with FBI and DHS poured out, their weapons drawn and leveled squarely at the two uniformed officers.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands in the air, right now!"

Kavanaugh and Heller stood paralyzed, the predator illusion entirely shattered. The flashing red and blue lights of their own cruiser now illuminated their complete and total downfall. Trembling, Kavanaugh slowly raised his hands. Heller dropped the dossier, the pages scattering across the asphalt, and fell to his knees.

A senior FBI agent, a woman with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, holstered her weapon and walked over to Darius. She pulled a key from her pocket and quickly unlocked the cuffs binding his wrists.
