She remembered the badge.

The box.

The files.

The way Keller had looked when he realized who Harold was.

Maybe the burglary was not about stolen property.

Maybe the real objective had been information.

Someone wanted access to Harold's home.

And they had found a way to make three police officers believe they were acting lawfully.

Maya suddenly remembered the witness report.

Someone had allegedly seen boxes being unloaded at Harold's house.

But Harold had told them exactly what those boxes contained.

His story had been consistent.

The question was no longer whether Harold had stolen anything.

The question was:

Who had given the police false information?

And why?

That afternoon, Detective Harris called Maya.

"I need you to come with me."

"Where?"

"Back to Newman's house."

"Why?"

"Because he has agreed to speak with us."

Maya hesitated.

"Does Sergeant Keller know?"

"No."

That answer told her everything.

Harold opened the door when Maya and Detective Harris arrived.

This time, neither carried a weapon in their hands.

No one pushed past him.

Harris held up his identification.

"Mr. Newman, we'd like to talk."

Harold stepped aside.

"Come in."

They sat in the living room.

Maya noticed the house looked completely different from the previous day.

Everything had been put back in place.

The kitchen cabinets were closed.

The files were gone.

The badge was no longer on the counter.

Harris sat forward.

"We owe you an explanation."

Harold nodded.

"I agree."

"We believe someone manipulated our department."

Harold looked at Maya.

"I suspected that yesterday."

Harris frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the officers who arrived here were too confident."

Maya listened.

Harold continued.

"They weren't investigating me. They were expecting something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Harris looked at him.

"Then what do you know?"

Harold leaned back.

"For the past six months, I've been assisting a federal investigation into an organized theft network."

Maya's eyes widened.

"The burglary?"

"Possibly connected."

Harris frowned.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I wasn't authorized to."

Harris nodded slowly.

"Then the badge..."

"Was deliberately left where someone could see it."

Maya stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to know whether the people watching me understood what it meant."

Harris looked confused.

"You think someone is watching you?"

"I know someone is."

Harold stood and walked toward the window.

"Three weeks ago, my office received information that someone inside a local agency was leaking investigative details."

Maya felt a chill.

"You think it's someone in the police department?"

"I don't know."

"Then why let yesterday happen?"

Harold turned.

"I didn't."

Harris stared at him.

Harold pointed toward the ceiling.

"There are cameras."

Maya looked up.

"Security cameras?"

"Yes."

"You recorded everything?"

"Audio and video."

Harris leaned forward.

"Do you still have the footage?"

Harold smiled.

"Of course."

He walked to a cabinet and removed a small storage device.

Then he placed it on the table.

Maya stared at it.

"What does it show?"

"Everything."

Harris looked at her.

Maya understood.

Their conversation from yesterday.

The search.

The handcuffs.

The moment Keller entered the house.

All of it.

Recorded.

But Harold had one more surprise.

He opened another file.

Inside was a photograph of a man Maya had never seen before.

"Who is he?" she asked.

Harold answered quietly.
