The desert had a way of remembering things.

It remembered the footsteps of men who had crossed its red earth and never returned. It remembered the names carved into weathered stones, the abandoned cabins swallowed by weeds, the wagon tracks that vanished beneath drifting sand. Most of all, it remembered pain.

Elias Carter had learned that during the twelve years he had lived alone on the Arizona frontier.

He had once believed the desert was empty.

Now he knew better.

Nothing was ever truly empty.

Not the canyon.

Not the abandoned mines.

Not the little settlements scattered between the mountains.

And certainly not the heart of a woman who had lost almost everything and still refused to surrender the last piece of herself.

Elias was riding home beneath a bruised evening sky when he heard the first gunshot.

He stopped his horse.

The animal's ears lifted.

For several seconds, Elias remained perfectly still.

The wind carried the sound away, but he had already recognized it.

A rifle.

Then came another shot.

This one was closer.

Elias turned his horse toward the sound.

He should have kept riding.

That was what experience told him.

Gunshots in the desert meant trouble. Trouble meant men with guns, and men with guns usually meant graves.

But something inside him refused to move.

He pressed his heels against the horse's sides.

Minutes later, he found the trail.

A broken branch.

A smear of blood across a pale stone.

Then a woman's scarf caught on the thorn of a mesquite bush.

Elias dismounted.

His hand rested near his revolver.

He followed the trail into a narrow ravine.

The storm arrived before he found her.

Rain began falling hard enough to turn dust into mud.

Lightning flashed.

For one brief second, Elias saw a woman lying beneath a rock shelf.

She was young, perhaps in her late twenties.

Her black hair was soaked against her face. Her clothes were torn, and one leg was bent awkwardly beneath her.

But it was her eyes that stopped him.

They were not the eyes of someone waiting to be rescued.

They were the eyes of someone prepared to fight whoever came close enough.

Elias took one careful step forward.

The woman immediately raised a knife.

"Stay away."

Her voice shook from exhaustion, but the threat inside it was unmistakable.

Elias stopped.

"All right."

She stared at him.

He slowly removed his coat.

"I'll leave this here."

He placed it on the ground between them.

The woman looked at the coat.

Then at him.

Then back at the coat.

"You don't have to trust me," Elias said.

"I don't."

"I know."

Another flash of lightning illuminated the canyon.

Somewhere beyond the rocks came the distant sound of horses.

The woman's expression changed.

Fear.

Not for herself.

Recognition.

"They're coming."

"Who?"

She swallowed.

"Men."

Elias looked toward the canyon entrance.

"How many?"

"Enough."

That answer told him everything.

He reached for his revolver.

The woman tightened her grip on the knife.

But instead of pointing it at her, Elias removed the gun from his belt and placed it on the ground.

"There."

Her eyes narrowed.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving you a reason not to be afraid of me."

"You think putting down a gun makes you harmless?"

"No."

He looked toward the approaching hoofbeats.

"It just means we're equally unarmed."

For the first time, something in her expression changed.

Not trust.

Not yet.

But uncertainty.

"My name is Elias."

She hesitated.

"Ayana."

The name disappeared beneath another burst of thunder.

Then the first rider appeared.

Elias had only seconds to decide.

He picked up his coat and held it toward her.

"Can you walk?"

"No."

"Can you ride?"

She looked at him as if the question offended her.

"If I couldn't, I would still try."

A faint smile almost appeared on Elias's face.
