“Too late.”

Brooks sighed.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I need your help.”

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“My help?”

“You know this county better than anyone.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Now you're learning.”

They built a plan.

Emily would stay at the sheriff's secure house.

The ledger would be copied.

The original would be hidden.

The bikers would provide information about Calvin's associates.

Evelyn would help identify properties connected to the old repair business.

But Calvin was already moving.

That night, he called Marcus.

“You should have stayed chained.”

Marcus listened silently.

Calvin continued.

“You have no idea what you've uncovered.”

Marcus asked:

“Where are you?”

Calvin laughed.

“You'll find out.”

The line went dead.

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“What did he say?”

Marcus shook his head.

“He wants us scared.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Then don't give him what he wants.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You aren't afraid of anything, are you?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Oh, I am.”

“What?”

“Losing another person I care about.”

That answer silenced him.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“That's the difference.”

“What difference?”

“When you've already lost the people you thought you couldn't live without, fear changes.”

She looked at Marcus.

“It becomes smaller.”

The Night at Harper's Repair

They decided to move the ledger.

It was a mistake.

Not because the plan was bad.

Because Calvin had already infiltrated the sheriff's office.

He knew.

At 11:42 that night, the lights at Harper's Roadside Repair went out.

Evelyn was inside.

Marcus, Ryan, Nathan, and Derek were nearby.

Sheriff Brooks had officers covering the property.

Then the first gunshot sounded.

Everyone dropped.

“Stay down!”

Brooks shouted.

A second shot shattered a window.

Evelyn crawled behind the counter.

Marcus looked at her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Stay here.”

“No.”

He stared at her.

“Evelyn.”

She pointed toward the back room.

“My husband's old compressor is still connected to the generator.”

Marcus understood.

“You have a backup power system?”

“Earl did.”

She disappeared.

Seconds later, the building lights came back on.

The attackers were exposed.

Sheriff Brooks's deputies returned fire.

Three suspects fled.

One was caught.

But Calvin escaped.

Derek chased him.

Ryan followed.

Marcus shouted:

“Don't!”

But they were already gone.

Evelyn ran outside.

Her knees hurt.

Her lungs burned.

She hated being seventy-four.

She hated that her body could no longer move as quickly as her mind.

Then she saw something.

Calvin's vehicle.

And beside it, a motorcycle.

Earl's old motorcycle.

The one Evelyn hadn't seen in four years.

Calvin had stolen it from the storage barn.

She stared.

“No.”

She ran toward it.

Marcus caught up.

“Evelyn!”

She pointed.

“That bike belonged to Earl.”

Calvin appeared from behind the building.

He held a gun.

“Step away.”

Evelyn stopped.

Marcus moved between them.

Calvin smiled.

“You should have stayed home, old woman.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You shouldn't have touched that motorcycle.”

Calvin laughed.

“That's what you're worried about?”

“No.”

She looked at the gun.

“I'm worried about what Earl would think of me if I let someone steal his bike.”

Calvin raised the weapon.

Then Derek appeared behind him.

He tackled Calvin.

The gun flew.

Ryan grabbed it.

Nathan secured Calvin's arms.

Sheriff Brooks arrived seconds later.

The entire fight lasted less than a minute.

But for Evelyn, it felt like an hour.

She walked toward Earl's motorcycle.

Dust covered the tank.

The paint was scratched.

But the old emblem was still visible.

Evelyn touched the handlebars.

She remembered Earl standing beside it.

He had loved that motorcycle.

He had once said it was the only thing he owned that never complained.

Evelyn smiled.

Then she cried.

Not loudly.

Just one tear.

Marcus stood beside her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

She wiped her cheek.

“I just realized I don't have to be angry anymore.”

Marcus looked confused.

“At who?”

“Life.”

She looked at the motorcycle.

“I spent four years being angry because he left me.”

She smiled.

“But maybe he didn't leave.”

“What do you mean?”

“He left pieces.”

She touched the toolbox.

“The toolbox.”

Then the motorcycle.

“The bike.”

She looked at the four men.

“And apparently, he left me enough stubbornness to save four idiots.”

Derek laughed.

“We're grateful idiots.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes.”

Sheriff Brooks walked toward them.

“Calvin's in custody.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Good.”

“And the ledger?”

Emily appeared from behind the sheriff.

She held up a flash drive.

“Copied.”

Brooks smiled.

“Then we're done.”

But Marcus looked toward the darkness.

“No.”
