"Take your hands off my chair."

Mark laughed.

"Relax."

"I asked you to remove your hands."

Dalton grinned.

"You ladies have an attitude."

Danielle placed her glass on the table.

"We came here to have dinner. We'd like to be left alone."

Dalton leaned closer.

"You know who I am?"

Dominique looked at his badge.

"Yes."

"Then you know I can make your night difficult."

"That sounds like a threat."

Dalton's smile disappeared.

The atmosphere changed.

Luis stopped polishing the glass.

A few customers looked over.

Kyle Boyd remained near the bar, watching.

Dalton placed one hand on his belt.

"Careful."

Danielle looked directly at him.

"Sergeant, you should probably walk away."

"Or what?"

"Nothing."

She paused.

"That's the point."

Dalton stared at her.

He had expected fear.

He did not get it.

That seemed to make him angrier.

"Maybe you need to learn some respect."

Dominique finally stood.

"Maybe you need to stop using your badge to intimidate people."

A silence fell across the bar.

Dalton's eyes narrowed.

"You don't know anything about me."

Dominique smiled faintly.

"No. But you're making it easy to learn."

For the first time that night, Dalton looked genuinely offended.

And none of them realized that the most important witness in the room had already started recording.

Aaron Cole, sitting three tables away, had quietly taken out his phone.

He pointed it toward the scene.

The camera was running.

Aaron Cole had never considered himself brave.

He was twenty-six, worked at a printing company, and usually avoided arguments whenever possible.

But he had seen Rick Dalton before.

Everyone in Pine Hollow had.

Dalton was the kind of officer who could make a person nervous without saying much. People talked about him in low voices. Small business owners complained privately about surprise inspections and tickets. Some residents said they had stopped filing complaints because nothing ever seemed to happen.

Aaron had heard those stories.

He had never known whether they were true.

Now he was watching something happen directly in front of him.

He kept his phone low.

The recording captured the room.

Dalton's voice.

The sisters' responses.

Mark's aggressive posture.

Kyle's growing uneasiness.

And Luis's silence.

Dalton noticed the phone.

"Hey!"

Aaron looked up.

"Me?"

"Put that phone away."

Aaron's heart began beating faster.

"It's just my phone."

"I know what it is."

Dalton walked toward him.

"You recording me?"

Aaron swallowed.

"I'm in a public business."

"That wasn't an answer."

Luis stepped from behind the bar.

"Rick."

Dalton turned.

"What?"

"Leave him alone."

"You stay out of it."

"This is my bar."

Dalton laughed.

"Exactly."

He leaned over the counter.

"And you remember that inspection I did last year?"

Luis's face hardened.

"Yes."

"Wouldn't want another one."

"You've threatened that before."

The room became silent.

Dalton stared at him.

Luis continued.

"I'm not giving you free drinks anymore."

A few customers exchanged looks.

Dalton's voice became quieter.

"You should think carefully."

Dominique heard every word.

She looked at Danielle.

Danielle nodded almost imperceptibly.

They had seen this pattern before.

A person with authority discovers that fear works.

Fear becomes routine.

Routine becomes entitlement.

And entitlement eventually becomes abuse.

Dominique stepped away from the booth.

"Sergeant Dalton."

He turned.

"What?"

"You're off duty."

"Correct."

"You're drinking."

"So?"

"You are carrying a firearm."

Dalton's hand rested near his holster.

Dominique continued.

"You're also threatening civilians."

Dalton laughed.

"Are you a lawyer?"

"No."

"Then don't give me legal lectures."

Mark stepped forward.

"Sit down."

Dominique ignored him.

Mark reached toward her shoulder.

That was his mistake.

Dominique caught his wrist before he could grab her.

She moved quickly but carefully, redirecting his arm and stepping away.

Mark stumbled.

The room erupted in nervous voices.

Dominique released him immediately.

"I warned you."

Mark stared at his wrist.

Dalton's face turned dark.

"You just assaulted an officer."

"No," Dominique replied. "You attempted to put your hands on me."

Dalton pointed toward the door.

"Both of you are leaving."

Danielle shook her head.

"We were already planning to."

"Not like that."

He reached for his handcuffs.

Danielle noticed.

So did Dominique.

Neither sister moved.

"Rick," Luis said quietly.

Dalton ignored him.

"Hands behind your backs."

Danielle remained calm.

"On what charge?"

"Disorderly conduct."

"Based on?"

"You."

Dalton snapped the cuffs onto Dominique first.

Then Danielle.

The metallic sound echoed through the bar.

Aaron's phone continued recording.

Kyle looked increasingly uncomfortable.

"Sergeant..."

Dalton turned.

"What?"

Kyle hesitated.
