“Not here.”

Ryan walked away.

Daniel turned toward Thomas.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Thomas picked up his coffee.

Then he looked at Maya.

“She handled herself well.”

Daniel followed his gaze.

“She did.”

“She didn't panic.”

“No.”

“She recognized the danger.”

Daniel nodded.

Thomas looked back toward Ryan.

“But he should have released.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“I agree.”

Thomas took a slow sip.

Then he said something Daniel would remember for years.

“People reveal themselves when they think nobody can stop them.”

 The Challenge

The incident should have ended there.

It didn't.

Two hours later, most competitors had left.

The gym had become quieter.

Mats were being cleaned.

Parents gathered their children.

Tournament staff packed tables.

Maya was preparing to leave when she heard laughter behind her.

Ryan.

She turned.

He stood near the mat with several of his teammates.

One of them held a phone.

Ryan noticed her.

“Leaving already?”

Maya stopped.

“I've been here since eight.”

“You sure you don't want another match?”

Daniel immediately stepped between them.

“No.”

Ryan smiled.

“I wasn't talking to you.”

“I know.”

Ryan looked at Maya.

“You won.”

Maya nodded.

“Then let it go.”

“I just think you got lucky.”

Maya stared at him.

“You choked me after the bell.”

Ryan's smile disappeared.

“I told you.”

“You didn't hear it.”

“Correct.”

“And you didn't feel my tap.”

“Correct.”

“Then why are we still talking?”

Several people nearby had stopped packing.

Ryan's teammate started recording.

Maya noticed.

So did Daniel.

Ryan stepped onto the edge of the mat.

“Because you know what happened.”

Maya said nothing.

“You got saved by the referee.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I tapped.”

Ryan laughed.

“You tapped because you were tired.”

Maya looked at him.

“No. I tapped because I was trapped.”

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

Then he said the sentence that changed everything.

“Fine.”

He pointed toward the center.

“Prove it.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because this isn't a tournament anymore.”

Ryan smiled.

“Exactly.”

He looked around.

“Now we can do it without a referee.”

The gym became silent.

Maya's stomach tightened.

Daniel whispered,

“Don't.”

Maya looked at Ryan.

Then at the spectators.

Then at the gray-haired man standing near the far wall.

Thomas Hale.

He had stayed.

He was watching.

Not Ryan.

Maya.

She didn't understand why.

Ryan noticed him too.

“You.”

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

Ryan stepped closer.

“You've been staring at me all afternoon.”

Thomas calmly replied,

“I've been watching.”

“What's the difference?”

“Watching requires attention.”

Ryan laughed.

“Do you have something to say?”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

Ryan turned back toward Maya.

“See?”

He pointed at Thomas.

“Even your mystery grandfather wants to see what happens.”

A few people laughed nervously.

Thomas didn't.

Maya looked at him.

Thomas gave her a small nod.

Not encouragement.

Not permission.

Something else.

Respect.

Maya stepped forward.

“Fine.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Maya.”

She looked at him.

“I don't want another fight.”

“Then don't.”

“I want this finished.”

Daniel sighed.

He knew that expression.

Maya had made up her mind.

Ryan stepped onto the mat.

The two faced each other.

The gym formed a loose circle.

No referee.

No scoreboard.

No tournament clock.

Just two people.

Ryan bounced lightly on his feet.

“You sure?”

Maya removed her jacket.

“Yes.”

Ryan smiled.

“Good.”

Thomas watched from the wall.

Daniel stood outside the circle.

“Three minutes,” Ryan said.

Maya didn't answer.

Ryan reached forward.

Maya moved.

He grabbed her wrist.

She rotated.

He changed levels.

She stepped away.

He lunged again.

This time Maya didn't retreat.
