His voice was barely audible.

"You should have learned who you were dealing with."

At 10:18 a.m., less than two blocks away, a federal surveillance vehicle was parked behind a landscaping truck.

Inside were three federal investigators.

They had been monitoring a separate corruption investigation involving the developer connected to Cynthia Mallory.

One investigator was watching a tablet.

Then he saw the live feed.

"That's him."

Another investigator looked.

"James Carter?"

"Yes."

"He's being attacked."

They watched.

Every strike.

Every command.

Every threat.

Every false claim of authority.

The supervisor immediately reached for the radio.

"Activate recording protocol."

The federal cameras shifted.

One mounted on a nearby utility pole.

Another on a vehicle.

A third on a concealed observation device.

Everything was captured.

The supervisor stared at the screen.

"Get local law enforcement."

Two patrol cars arrived.

Then a county supervisor.

Then an internal affairs investigator.

The fake officers suddenly became nervous.

Derek stepped backward.

"These men are interfering with HOA enforcement."

The county supervisor looked at him.

"Who authorized you to detain this man?"

Derek said nothing.

"Show me your arrest authority."

Nothing.

"Your warrant?"

Nothing.

"Your statutory authority?"

Silence.

The supervisor looked at the handcuffs.

"Remove them."

Derek hesitated.

"Now."

James slowly stood.

His shoulder hurt.

His face was bleeding.

But his eyes were calm.

The county supervisor recognized him.

"Mr. Carter?"

James nodded.

"Yes."

The supervisor stared.

"You're James Carter."

"Last time I checked."

The supervisor looked at the others.

"Do you know who this man is?"

Derek shook his head.

The supervisor's voice became colder.

"He's a former FBI special agent."

Derek's face changed.

James said:

"Former."

The supervisor shook his head.

"That doesn't make what you did any less serious."

Then a black federal SUV arrived.

Laura Bennett stepped out.

She looked at James.

Then at the men.

And said:

"Nobody leaves."

Inside the SUV, the investigators played the footage.

The fake officers watched themselves attacking James.

There was no argument.

No ambiguity.

No missing moment.

The cameras had captured everything.

Their arrival.

The false order.

The threats.

The first strike.

The second strike.

The moment they grabbed Olivia.

Derek stared at the screen.

"This isn't legal."

Laura looked at him.

"Correct."

He swallowed.

"You can't use private cameras."

Laura answered:

"These weren't only private cameras."

She placed another video on the screen.

Federal surveillance footage.

Derek's face went pale.

"You were watching us?"

Laura nodded.

"For another investigation."

She paused.

"Unfortunately for you, you became part of it."

The investigators then showed footage of Cynthia meeting with Derek two nights earlier.

Her voice was clear.

"Make him afraid."

Derek stared.

Cynthia had ordered the operation.
