"Nick..."

Her voice broke.

"Call 911."

Nick grabbed his phone.

His hands were shaking so badly that he almost dropped it.

For the first time since they had moved into Oakridge Drive, the quiet neighborhood heard Allison Grace scream.

And that scream would eventually become the sound that shattered the silence surrounding the entire community.

The ambulance arrived twenty-three minutes later.

To Nick, those minutes felt like hours.

He rode beside Allison as paramedics worked over Logan.

The little boy was still breathing.

That was all they knew.

At the hospital, doctors rushed him into emergency treatment.

Allison stood outside the trauma room with blood on her sweater.

She kept staring at it.

Not because she didn't understand what had happened.

Because she understood it too well.

Nick paced the hallway.

Every few seconds, he looked toward the closed doors.

Then a detective approached.

"Mr. and Mrs. Grace?"

Nick turned.

"Yes."

"I'm Detective Jared Wells."

He opened a notebook.

"Can you tell me what happened?"

Nick did.

Every detail.

The truck.

The clothing.

The words on the vehicle.

The argument.

The brick.

The escape.

Wells listened.

When Nick finished, the detective asked:

"You're saying they were HOA employees?"

"They claimed they were."

"Did they identify themselves?"

"No."

"Did they show badges?"

"No."

"Did they provide paperwork?"

"No."

Wells nodded slowly.

Allison looked at him.

"They threw a brick through our window."

"I understand."

"It hit our baby."

"I understand."

"No," Allison said. "You don't."

Her voice was quiet.

"You don't understand what it feels like to watch someone throw a brick at your child."

Wells looked uncomfortable.

He closed his notebook.

"There's a possibility this was a mistake."

Nick stared at him.

"A mistake?"

"Wrong address. Miscommunication. An overreaction."

Nick pointed toward the emergency room.

"My son is fighting for his life because someone thought they had the right to come onto our property and attack us."

Wells sighed.

"I'm not saying it isn't serious."

"Then treat it seriously."

The detective hesitated.

"We'll investigate."

But his tone lacked confidence.

Later that night, the official HOA website released a short statement.

The organization expressed regret over an "unfortunate misunderstanding."

There was no mention of Logan's injuries.

No explanation of who had authorized the men.

No apology.

Nick read the statement from a chair beside his son's hospital bed.

Logan was connected to machines.

His tiny body looked impossibly small beneath the white sheets.

Allison sat beside him, holding his hand.

Nick looked at his wife.

"We're going to find out who did this."

She didn't answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on Logan.

Then, quietly, she said:

"Find out why."

Nick nodded.

He opened his laptop.

The investigation had begun.

Nick had spent years working with electrical systems.

His job had taught him something important.

When a complicated system failed, the visible damage was rarely the whole story.

You had to trace the connections.

Find the source.

Follow the current backward.

That night, he decided to do the same thing.

He began examining the HOA's public records.

Then its website.

Then archived pages.

Then public filings.

Eventually he found something unexpected.

The HOA had recently created a private "property compliance response group."

There was little public information about it.

But Nick discovered references to it in online documents.

He kept digging.

Near four in the morning, he found a cache of improperly secured files.

He didn't break into a sophisticated government system.

The HOA's security was simply poor.

Among the files were meeting notes, invoices, complaints, and internal correspondence.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Kelly Mason.

The HOA president.

Nick opened email after email.
