Chapter 1 - THE KICK THAT SILENCED THE BANK

Daniel Thompson planted his left foot on the polished marble floor and drove his right shoe into the lower front of Martha Robinson’s worn brown coat.

The impact knocked the sixty-eight-year-old woman backward.

Her heel slipped.

Her shoulder struck the reinforced glass partition with a violent thud.

The glass trembled but did not break.

Martha’s old leather purse opened as she fell, scattering bank papers, her driver’s license, and a certified cashier’s check across the floor.

Daniel straightened his black suit jacket.

Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE WORN COAT

Twenty-three minutes earlier, Martha had entered the bank alone.

No driver waited outside.

No assistant carried her purse.

No expensive coat announced wealth.

She wore the same brown winter coat she had owned for twelve years.

The cuffs were frayed.

One button had been replaced with a darker one.

Her walking shoes were clean but old.
