“There is something you need to know.”
“What?”
“The evidence on that drive isn't just about maintenance records.”
Zara waited.
“It shows payments.”
“To whom?”
“Several people inside the airline.”
Zara's eyes moved toward Elizabeth.
Daniel continued.
“Someone has been selling operational information to outside companies.”
“Passenger information?”
“Yes.”
“That's why they knew about me.”
“Possibly.”
Zara felt cold.
“Dad, why would anyone care about my seat?”
“Because the system flagged your reservation as protected.”
“And that mattered?”
“It meant your itinerary had additional privacy controls.”
“So moving me required someone senior.”
“Yes.”
“And Martin had access.”
“Yes.”
“But why Richard?”
Daniel paused.
“Because Martin wanted Richard to look like the problem.”
Zara turned toward Richard.
The man was staring at the floor.
“What?”
“Richard has enemies inside his own company.”
Richard heard that.
He looked up.
“That's an understatement.”
Daniel said nothing.
Richard spoke.
“Martin has been trying to take control of Bennett International for two years.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Explain.”
Richard leaned back.
“Bennett International owns logistics, infrastructure, and aviation support businesses. Martin discovered that if he controlled enough information, he could influence acquisitions.”
“Why would he need you?”
“Because I was the final signatory on several transactions.”
“So he wanted you blamed?”
“Yes.”
Richard looked at Zara.
“And he wanted the evidence destroyed.”
Zara asked:
“Why did he tell you to take my seat?”
Richard answered slowly.
“Because he wanted me close to you.”
Zara frowned.
“Why?”
“Because he believed your father had hidden the drive with you.”
Zara looked at the device.
“He was right.”
Richard shook his head.
“He didn't know exactly where it was. He thought I'd pressure you into giving it to me.”
Zara looked at him.
“You were going to?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I don't know.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“No.”
He opened his eyes.
“I wasn't sure.”
Zara studied him.
“Would you have?”
Richard's face tightened.
“Two hours ago, maybe.”
“And now?”
“Now I know what Martin is capable of.”
Zara nodded.
That was the first honest answer Richard had given her.
At 37,000 feet, Marcus opened the encrypted drive.
It contained hundreds of files.
Contracts.
Emails.
Payment records.
Access logs.
Internal messages.
And photographs.
One folder was labeled:
SEAT 2A
Marcus opened it.
There were screenshots of Zara's itinerary.
Her age.
Her travel history.
Her father's corporate affiliations.
The name of her school.
Emergency contact information.
The file had been accessed repeatedly.
Zara's stomach tightened.
Someone had been watching her for weeks.
Captain Hart looked over Marcus's shoulder.
“Who authorized that?”
Marcus checked the logs.
“Martin Vale.”
Richard looked sick.
“That's impossible.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?”
“Martin told me he didn't know the girl's name.”
Zara stared at him.
“He knew.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Then another file appeared.
OPERATIONAL TRANSFER — LONDON
It contained a scheduled action for Heathrow.
Time: 18:40 London time.
Location: Terminal 3.
Target: Coleman.
Status: Pending.
Zara's heart stopped.
“Target?” she whispered.
Marcus immediately closed the file.
But the damage was done.
Everyone understood.
This was never simply about humiliating a teenager.
It was about intercepting her before she reached London.
Daniel heard the silence over the secure line.
“What did you find?”
Marcus answered.
“Mr. Coleman, you need to contact British authorities immediately.”
Daniel's voice became cold.
“Already done.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“I sent the evidence twenty minutes ago.”
Captain Hart looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
Zara realized something.
Her father had not been reacting to events.
He had been preparing for them.
He had expected danger.
He had expected someone to attempt to intercept her.
But he had underestimated how close the threat was.
Three hours later, another message arrived.
HEATHROW SECURITY TEAM CONFIRMED.
Then another.
MARTIN VALE LOCATION UNKNOWN.
Then a third.
POLICE REQUEST FLIGHT 212 LAND WITHOUT PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT.
Zara looked at the messages.
“What happens when we land?”
Captain Hart answered honestly.
“Police will meet the aircraft.”
“Will I be safe?”
“Yes.”
Zara nodded.
Richard spoke quietly.
“I hope you are.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I don't think Martin is finished.”
The aircraft continued toward London.
Outside the window, the Atlantic was dark.
Inside the cabin, nobody slept.
The Door Opens in London
Flight 212 descended through gray clouds over London just after 6:20 p.m.
Zara looked down at the city.
She had imagined arriving in London many times.
She had imagined museums, bookstores, rain, and walking beside her father through streets she had only seen in photographs.
She had never imagined police cars waiting on the tarmac.
When the aircraft touched down, the cabin remained silent.
The wheels hit the runway.
The aircraft slowed.
The captain announced their arrival.
Then the plane stopped.
Nobody stood.
The door opened.
A group of British officers entered.
Behind them were airline security officials and investigators.
A woman in a dark coat approached Captain Hart.
“Inspector Helen Moore.”
Hart nodded.
“Captain Elizabeth Hart.”
“We've been expecting you.”
Moore looked toward Zara.
Then toward Richard.
Then at Marcus.
“Is the evidence secure?”
Marcus held up the encrypted device.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Her eyes moved toward Victor Sloan.
“And him?”
“Former Bennett security contractor.”
Moore nodded.
“Take him.”
Victor stood without resistance.
Richard remained seated.
Moore approached him.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“You'll need to come with us for questioning.”
Richard nodded.
He looked toward Zara.
“I'm sorry.”
Zara looked at him.
“Tell the truth.”
Richard nodded.
“I will.”
He stood.
As he passed her, he stopped.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“The seat.”
Zara smiled faintly.
“It was always my seat.”
Richard gave a tired smile.
“Yes.”
Then he walked away.
Zara stepped into the terminal.
Her father was waiting.
She ran to him.
Daniel caught her in his arms.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Zara hugged him tighter.
“You're still my dad.”
