Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

By 3:00 AM, Liam was crouching behind the heavy mahogany desk in his private basement study.

He was still wearing his black silk burial suit, though he had torn off the silk tie and unbuttoned his collar. His body was weak, his legs shaking from the residue of the poison, but Luna had fed him warm water and crushed sugar tablets from the kitchen pantry, slowly restoring his blood glucose.

"The cremation van arrives at 8:00 AM on Sunday," Luna reported, standing guard near the locked study door. "Carmine ordered a closed-casket transport directly to the South Side crematorium owned by the Vancamp family. He doesn't want an open service at the church."

"Because he knows a real mortician would notice the lack of embalming fluid," Liam grunted, opening a floor-safe hidden beneath the rug.

He punched in a seven-digit code that only he knew. The heavy iron door clicked open.

Inside lay three things: two snub-nosed .38 revolvers with silver grips, $200,000 in unrecorded cash, and a small black ledger containing the private addresses, safehouses, and hidden sins of every captain in the Falcone syndicate.

Liam took the cash and one of the guns, checking the cylinder with a quick, practiced flick of his wrist. The cold weight of the steel in his palm felt more natural than his own pulse.

"You can't stay in Chicago," Luna urged him, her hand resting over her belly. "Carmine has forty men guarding the house and thirty more stationed at Taylor Street. If anyone sees you, they won't hesitate to finish the job."

"I am not leaving Chicago," Liam said softly, looking at her. "And neither are you."

Luna flinched slightly. "Mr. Falcone, I—"

"You are carrying Tommy’s child," Liam said, his voice softer than it had ever been. "Tommy died because I was too busy to listen to him for five minutes. That blood is on my hands. I don't break debts, Luna. You and that child are under my protection for the rest of your lives."
