"Why?"

"Because you don't want him coming after you."

The boy nodded.

Then walked away.

Daniel sat there alone.

Ten minutes later, he called Wanda.

She answered immediately.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"You don't sound like nothing."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Grandma..."

"Yes?"

"Can you pick me up?"

She didn't ask questions.

"I'll be there."

Twenty minutes later, Wanda arrived.

Daniel came outside wearing his backpack.

She saw his face.

She saw the bruise forming beneath his eye.

She saw the dried blood near his nose.

She said nothing until they were inside the car.

Then she asked:

"Who did this?"

Daniel stared through the windshield.

"Brock."

"Why?"

"The bell rang."

Wanda gripped the steering wheel.

"Tell me exactly."

Daniel did.

Every word.

Every insult.

Every laugh.

Every second of humiliation.

Wanda listened.

She didn't interrupt.

When he finished, she asked:

"Did you hit him back?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I knew if I did, I'd be the one blamed."

Wanda nodded.

That answer told her more than anything else.

Daniel wasn't weak.

He was frightened of becoming the kind of person Brock was.

That mattered.

When they reached home, Daniel went upstairs.

Wanda stayed in the kitchen.

She opened an old drawer.

Inside was a photograph.

It was faded.

Almost thirty years old.

A younger Wanda stood in the photograph wearing a white martial arts uniform.

Her hair was black.

Her expression was serious.

Around her neck hung a medal.

Behind her stood a group of people in military uniforms.

Wanda stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then she closed the drawer.

She had promised herself she would never go back.

Never again.

Not after what happened years ago.

Not after she walked away from that life.

Not after she built a quiet existence for herself.

But Brock Dalton had made one mistake.

He had mistaken silence for surrender.

Wanda picked up her phone.

She called Daniel's mother.

"We need to talk."

 The Woman Behind the Name

Brock Dalton knew almost nothing about Wanda Ellis.

That was his first mistake.

He knew she was Daniel's grandmother.

He knew she was sixty-two.

He knew she dressed simply.

He knew she worked part-time at a community center.

He knew she didn't look like someone who belonged in a combat academy.

What he didn't know was that thirty-seven years earlier, Wanda Ellis had been one of the most disciplined combat instructors in the state.

She had started training when she was seventeen.

At twenty-three, she entered her first regional competition.

At twenty-seven, she began teaching.

At thirty, she was invited to train advanced law-enforcement defensive tactics.

At thirty-four, she became a senior instructor.

She wasn't famous.

She didn't want to be.

She never appeared on television.

She never built a social media following.

She didn't sell expensive training programs.

Her philosophy was simple:

A martial artist's greatest victory was learning when not to fight.

Then, years ago, something happened.

During a demonstration, one of her students suffered a catastrophic injury.

The student survived.

But Wanda blamed herself.

She had pushed him too hard.

She had believed discipline meant demanding more.

After that, she stopped teaching.

She stopped competing.

She stopped fighting.

She married.

She raised children.

She became a grandmother.

She became quiet.

And she never told Daniel about her past.

Until now.

That night, Daniel found her sitting at the kitchen table.

The old photograph was beside her.

He picked it up.

"Who's this?"

Wanda looked at him.

"Me."

Daniel blinked.

"That's you?"

"Yes."

"You look... different."

"I was different."

Daniel studied the photograph.

"Are you a fighter?"

Wanda smiled faintly.

"Once."

"How good were you?"

"Good enough."

"Grandma."

She laughed softly.

"That's not an answer."

"No."

"Then tell me."

Wanda looked down.

"I trained for twenty-five years."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Twenty-five?"

"Almost."

"Why didn't you ever tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to choose your own path."
