And she had no intention of becoming a fighter.

Her father changed that.

Samuel Moore had served in the military and later opened a small martial arts school in Ohio.

He taught discipline more than fighting.

His students learned balance.

Control.

Awareness.

Patience.

Wanda became his best student.

She hated losing.

Her father knew it.

“You don't have to win every fight,” he told her.

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

She frowned.

He smiled.

“One day you will.”

Wanda eventually competed.

Local tournaments.

Regional events.

Open divisions.

She wasn't famous.

She didn't want to be.

But she became exceptionally good.

Then, one night, a stranger attacked her outside the school.

Wanda defended herself.

She won.

But she injured her knee.

The doctors said surgery could help.

Wanda couldn't afford it.

She worked instead.

Years passed.

The pain remained.

She stopped training.

Life became bills, family and work.

Her father died.

Her mother died.

Denise grew up.

Marcus was born.

Wanda's fighting life disappeared.

Or so she thought.

But the body remembers.

Thirty-seven years later, when Brock attacked her with predictable combinations, something old woke up.

Not anger.

Not pride.

Memory.

Her father's voice.

“Don't fight the person.”

“Fight the movement.”

That was what Calvin had seen.

Wanda wasn't reacting to Brock's fists.

She was reading the decisions before they became attacks.

And that terrified him.

Because Calvin had trained fighters for twenty years.

He knew what natural talent looked like.

Wanda wasn't simply talented.

She was trained.

Deeply trained.

The Question

The gym slowly began filling with whispers.

“Who is she?”

“Did she used to fight?”

“Why didn't she say anything?”

Brock hated every second of it.

He walked toward Wanda.

“You've been lying.”

Wanda frowned.

“No.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

“Yes.”

That answer stunned him.

“You admit it?”

“I didn't know how much I remembered.”

Brock laughed bitterly.

“You embarrassed me.”

Wanda looked at him.

“You embarrassed yourself.”

The room became silent.

Brock stepped forward.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

“Then what do you think?”

Wanda considered the question.

“I think you need to learn something.”

“What?”

“That being strong isn't the same as being dangerous.”

Brock stared at her.

Calvin stepped between them.

“That's enough.”

Brock shook his head.

“No.”

Calvin looked at him.

“Yes.”

Brock's voice dropped.

“I want another round.”

“No.”

“I want another round.”

Calvin didn't move.

“You're angry.”

“So?”

“So you're not training.”

Brock clenched his fists.

Wanda quietly picked up her cleaning cloth.

“I should finish the floor.”

Someone laughed.

Brock turned toward the sound.

The laughter stopped immediately.

Wanda walked away.

For the first time in years, Brock felt something unfamiliar.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Humiliation without an audience he could control.

The Old Photograph

The next morning, Calvin arrived early.

Wanda was already there.

She was mopping the hallway.

“Wanda.”

She looked over.

“Yes?”

“I need to ask you something.”

She leaned on the mop.

“What?”

“Did you ever compete?”

She smiled faintly.

“A little.”

“How much is a little?”

“Enough.”

Calvin laughed.

“That's not an answer.”

“No.”

He pulled out his phone.

“Can I ask you to demonstrate something?”

Wanda hesitated.

“What?”

“A basic escape.”

She looked at him.

“My knee isn't good.”

“I know.”

He nodded.

“I won't push it.”

She agreed.

Twenty minutes later, Calvin understood.

Wanda's technique was old-fashioned.

Precise.

Economical.

She didn't waste movement.

She didn't rely on speed.

Everything came from structure.

Afterward, Calvin sat quietly.

“You were very good.”

“I was younger.”

“You still are.”

She smiled.

“No.”

Calvin hesitated.

“Brock doesn't understand.”

“He doesn't have to.”

“Yes, he does.”

“Why?”

“Because he's hurting people.”

Wanda looked toward the gym.
