The following Thursday was the quarterly HOA board meeting. Fourteen neighbors showed up. That might not sound like a lot, but in a neighborhood where attendance usually consisted of just Margaret and David, it was a revolution.

Someone nominated a new president. Margaret, sensing the shift in the wind and perhaps terrified that her long history of harassment might undergo legal scrutiny by a police captain, did not contest the nomination. She sat at the front table, her lips pressed into a thin white line, and packed up her folders.

Claire didn't attend the meeting. She was working the swing shift. But when she got home that night, she parked her dark blue, state-issued SUV right in the middle of our driveway.

The next morning, the neighborhood was perfectly quiet. There were no orange notices on our door. There were no clipboards, no unannounced visits, and no sirens. Just the sound of sprinklers hitting the grass, and the quiet satisfaction of a morning well earned.
