It was a blistering Saturday afternoon in mid-July. The sun beat down on the manicured lawns of Silver Leaf. Marcus was standing inside his backyard, dressed comfortably in a fitted dark grey t-shirt and light blue denim jeans. The pool water was crystal clear, a vibrant, inviting blue against the harsh summer heat.

Suddenly, the aggressive rattling of metal shattered the peace.

Marcus turned his head. Standing on the other side of his wrought-iron gate was Brenda, the President of the Silver Leaf HOA. At fifty, Brenda was a Caucasian woman who believed her title granted her supreme authority over the laws of physics and property rights. She wore a bright coral-peach blouse, stark white slacks, and a pair of designer sunglasses pushed up onto her blonde hair. In her right hand, she clutched a beach tote; behind her stood three of her friends, all dressed in swimwear, expecting a luxurious afternoon by the water.

Brenda violently shook the locked gate again, her face contorting with sheer indignation. She spotted Marcus standing calmly on the pool deck.

"Open this gate right now!" Brenda screeched, her voice shrill and echoing over the water. She pointed an accusatory finger through the iron bars. "The HOA says this pool belongs to the community!"

Marcus walked slowly toward the gate. He didn't rush. He didn't display an ounce of intimidation. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, opened his property deed file, and held the screen up calmly.

"My deed says it belongs to me," Marcus replied. His voice was a deep, resonant baritone, projecting an unwavering authority that cut right through her hysteria.

Brenda’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. She was entirely unaccustomed to being told no, let alone being locked out of an amenity she had illegally enjoyed for the past three years. She gripped the iron bars, her knuckles turning white.
