The Charger swerved slightly as Granger processed the information.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Granger said, his voice losing its tough-guy edge.

"I think you do," Arthur replied. "And you need to ask yourself a very important question right now, Granger. Are you willing to take the fall for a corrupt housewife's Ponzi scheme? Because my GPS locator is currently pinging a team of state troopers who are following us about a mile back. When this car stops, they won't be asking for HOA badges."

Granger slammed on the brakes, the car skidding onto the shoulder of the highway. He turned around in his seat, a gun drawn, pointing it over the center console at Arthur. His hand was shaking.

"Who the hell are you?" Granger demanded.

Arthur looked at the gun barrel without blinking. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I am a Senior Lead Investigator for the State Department of Public Integrity. And you, gentlemen, are in way over your heads."

Chapter 10: The Warehouse Confrontation

Granger stared at Arthur for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the car was broken only by the sound of passing traffic. The realization of what he had done was slowly washing over the mercenary's face.

"You're... you're a cop?" the passenger stammered, visibly paling.

"State investigator," Arthur clarified calmly. "And if you shoot me, Granger, you upgrade from kidnapping to capital murder. Put the gun away, put the car in drive, and take us to the warehouse. Let Brenda dig her grave completely."

"Why should I?" Granger asked, his finger hovering near the trigger.

"Because if you cooperate right now, I will testify that you were unwitting pawns manipulated by Brenda Vance. You'll still face charges, but you might avoid a decade in a federal penitentiary. If you try to run, my team will hunt you down before sunset. Your choice."

Granger lowered the gun, his shoulders slumping. He looked like a man who had just realized he stepped on a landmine. He holstered the weapon, put the car in gear, and merged back onto the highway.

Ten minutes later, they pulled into a desolate industrial park and rolled up to a rusted corrugated metal building: the headquarters of Green Vistas LLC. The lot was empty save for a few broken pallets and a single, pristine white Mercedes SUV. Brenda’s car.

Granger parked the Charger and turned the engine off. "What now?" he asked, completely devoid of his former bravado.

"You bring me inside," Arthur instructed. "You let Brenda do the talking. You do exactly what she hired you to do, right up until the moment I say otherwise."

Granger nodded mutely. He and his partner got out, opened the back doors, and hauled Arthur to his feet. They marched him toward the rolling metal door of the warehouse.

Inside, the space was mostly empty, smelling of old oil and fertilizer. In the center of the room, sitting on a folding chair like a queen on a throne, was Brenda Vance. Her husband, Thomas, stood nervously beside her, clutching a crowbar.

As Arthur was dragged in, Brenda stood up, clapping her hands slowly in a theatrical display of victory.

"Well, well, well," Brenda gloated, her voice echoing in the cavernous space. "Mr. Pendelton. I see you've finally decided to respect the authority of the board."

Arthur stood tall, despite his bound hands. "You know, Brenda, when you threatened to make my life a living hell, I didn't realize it involved a field trip to a dilapidated warehouse."

Brenda’s smile vanished, replaced by a snarl. "You think this is a joke? You think you can challenge my authority, threaten my family's income, and get away with it? I built Oak Creek. It belongs to me."

"It belongs to the homeowners," Arthur corrected. "The same homeowners you've been stealing from for half a decade. I've seen the books, Brenda. Green Vistas? Crystal Clear Solutions? You're not even a good criminal. Your paper trail looks like it was designed by a toddler."

Thomas Vance stepped forward, brandishing the crowbar. "Shut your mouth, Pendelton! You don't know anything!"

"I know you billed the HOA for fifty hours of landscaping last week while your only two mowers were in the shop for repairs," Arthur countered flawlessly. "I know your wife authorized a $50,000 legal retainer to her brother-in-law for a lawsuit that never existed. I know everything."

Brenda’s face twisted in rage. "It doesn't matter what you think you know! You're a trespasser. A menace. Granger, beat him until he agrees to sign over the deed to his house, and then dump him in the river."

Granger didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at Arthur.

"Granger! I pay you to follow orders!" Brenda shrieked.

"Actually," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the full weight of his office. "She doesn't pay you, Granger. The taxpayers of Oak Creek pay you. With stolen funds."

Arthur looked directly at Brenda, who was now trembling with a mix of fury and sudden, creeping dread.

"Brenda Vance," Arthur said clearly, ensuring his hidden wire picked up every word. "You just ordered a physical assault and extortion. You have orchestrated a kidnapping. And you have admitted, in the presence of witnesses, to defrauding your community."

"Who the hell do you think you are?" Brenda whispered.

Arthur smiled. "I am Arthur Pendelton. State Investigator, Department of Public Integrity."

He twisted his wrists violently, snapping the cheap zip-ties with a loud crack. He rubbed his wrists and reached into his pocket, pulling out his badge and flipping it open.

"And you, Brenda, are under arrest."

Chapter 11: The Cavalry Arrives

For three agonizing seconds, no one in the warehouse moved. The revelation hung in the dusty air, a suffocating blanket of reality crushing Brenda Vance’s delusions of grandeur.

Thomas dropped the crowbar. It hit the concrete floor with a deafening clang, echoing off the metal walls. He backed away from his wife, his hands raised in surrender.

Brenda’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "You... you're lying. You're a homeowner. You built a fence."

"I am a homeowner who appreciates a good cedar fence," Arthur corrected. "I also happen to put corrupt officials in federal prison for a living. You picked the wrong house to harass, Brenda."

Brenda’s eyes darted frantically toward the exit. "Granger! Shoot him! Shoot him now!"

Granger and his partner immediately dropped to their knees and placed their hands behind their heads, wanting absolutely no part of assaulting a state agent.

"I think your security team just resigned," Arthur noted dryly.

Suddenly, the deafening wail of sirens shattered the quiet of the industrial park. The sound of heavy tires screeching on asphalt outside the warehouse signaled the arrival of Arthur's backup. Red and blue lights flashed violently through the dirty skylights, painting the interior of the warehouse in strobing colors.
