Dominique's expression changed.

But she didn't shout.

She didn't run.

She walked toward Imani.

"Baby."

Imani looked at her mother.

The moment she recognized Dominique, the control she had been holding onto disappeared.

"Mom."

Dominique knelt in the wet grass.

"Come here."

Imani collapsed into her arms.

Dominique wrapped her jacket around her daughter.

"Are you hurt?"

"I couldn't breathe."

Dominique closed her eyes briefly.

Then she stood.

She turned toward Marjorie.

The neighborhood became silent.

Dominique spoke quietly.

"Put the hose down."

Marjorie lifted her chin.

"This is an HOA enforcement matter."

Dominique's eyes remained fixed on her.

"No."

She took one step forward.

"This is the moment you explain why you put your hands on my thirteen-year-old daughter."

Marjorie opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Paul's voice came from the sidewalk.

"I recorded it."

Marjorie froze.

Mrs. Denton's voice followed from across the street.

"So did I."

The young mother at the next house raised her phone.

"My doorbell camera caught it too."

For the first time, Marjorie looked frightened.

The clipboard in her hand suddenly seemed very small.

And the title of HOA president suddenly seemed powerless.

Dominique did not touch Marjorie.

She didn't need to.

Instead, she stayed beside Imani while Lorraine came slowly out onto the porch.

The elderly woman had heard the shouting.

When she saw her granddaughter wrapped in Dominique's jacket, her hand went to her mouth.

"Imani?"

"I'm okay, Grandma."

Lorraine knew immediately that the words were a lie.

She stepped down from the porch.

"What happened?"

Dominique answered before Marjorie could.

"She sprayed Imani with the hose."

Lorraine looked at Marjorie.

For years, she had tolerated Marjorie.

That was different from respecting her.

Marjorie had sent letters.

She had issued notices.

She had complained about flowerpots, decorations, parking, lawn ornaments, and even the color of Lorraine's porch cushions.

Lorraine had endured all of it because she didn't want conflict.

But now her granddaughter was standing in front of her, soaked and shaking.

Something in Lorraine's face hardened.

"You sprayed my granddaughter?"

Marjorie immediately pointed toward Imani.

"She refused to follow instructions."

Lorraine stared at her.

"She is thirteen."

"That doesn't make her exempt from community rules."

"She was watering my flowers."

"She was wasting water."

Lorraine looked at the garden.

Then at the hose.

Then back at Marjorie.

"You crossed onto my property and took my hose."

Marjorie lifted the clipboard.

"I was performing my responsibilities."

"No."

Lorraine's voice was surprisingly steady.

"You were satisfying yourself."

Marjorie stepped back.

"You need to be careful."

Dominique finally spoke.

"That is not a threat you should be making."

Marjorie looked at her.

"You think your profession makes you untouchable."

Dominique said nothing.

Paul stepped forward.

"I don't think that's what she thinks."

Everyone turned.

Paul held up his phone.

"I have the video."

Marjorie stared at him.

"Give me that."

"No."

"You cannot record people without permission."

Paul shook his head.

"You might want to check the law before saying that."

Mrs. Denton approached from her driveway.

"I have video too."

Marjorie looked around.

"All of you are exaggerating what happened."

Dominique shook her head.

"No. You are."

She looked at her daughter.

"Imani, go inside with Grandma."

Imani hesitated.

"I want to stay."

"You don't have to."

"I want to know what happens."

Dominique softened.

"You don't need to protect me."

"I'm not."

Imani looked at Marjorie.

"I'm tired of being scared of her."

The sentence hit Dominique harder than anything else.

She crouched.

"You're not responsible for what adults do."

Imani nodded.

Lorraine took her inside.

Dominique turned back toward Marjorie.

"Now we can talk."

Marjorie crossed her arms.

"I intend to file a formal violation against this household."

"For what?"

"Failure to supervise a minor guest. Improper water usage. Hostile behavior toward an HOA representative."

Dominique almost smiled.

"Fine."

Marjorie blinked.

"Fine?"

"File it."

"You don't understand how serious this is."

"I understand exactly how serious it is."

Dominique took out her phone.

"I'm documenting your statement."

Marjorie stiffened.

Dominique continued.

"You entered private property. You took a garden hose from a thirteen-year-old. You used it against her after she told you to stop. You are now threatening another enforcement action."

"I was correcting behavior."

"You were using force."

"It was water."

"Water can hurt."

Marjorie scoffed.

"Don't be ridiculous."

Dominique looked toward Paul.

"Play the recording."

Paul did.

The first few seconds contained voices.

Then Marjorie's voice became clear.

"Give me the hose."

Imani answered.

"No."

Then came the sound of the struggle.

Then Imani's voice.

"Please stop."

The video continued.

Marjorie watched herself spraying the child.

No one spoke.

When it ended, Paul lowered the phone.

Marjorie swallowed.

"I was frustrated."

Dominique nodded.

"That's obvious."

"I didn't intend to hurt her."

"Intent doesn't erase conduct."

Marjorie looked toward the house.

"You people are making this into something it isn't."

Lorraine appeared in the doorway.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Lorraine held Imani's hand.

"It is exactly what it is."

Marjorie's face tightened.

Lorraine continued.

"For years, you have treated this neighborhood like your personal kingdom."

"I have protected this community."

"You have frightened people."

"I enforce the rules."

"You enforce them against people who don't agree with you."

Marjorie said nothing.

Lorraine pointed toward the sidewalk.

"Look at those people."

Marjorie did.

Paul.

Mrs. Denton.

Several neighbors.

People who normally avoided confrontation.

"They've been afraid of you for years," Lorraine said.

Then she looked at her granddaughter.

"Today you made them less afraid."

A police siren sounded in the distance.

Marjorie looked surprised.
