The morning dew still clung to the pristine grass of my

front yard when I first noticed the anomaly. The

neighborhood of Oakhaven was exactly the sort of quiet,

unassuming suburb where nothing of consequence ever

truly happened. Houses here were painted in muted,

comforting tones of beige, slate, and pale yellow. Lawns

were meticulously manicured, and the most dramatic

event in recent memory had been a mild dispute over a

misplaced recycling bin. I had moved here specifically for

that peace. After a decade of the relentless, grinding noise

of the city, I craved silence. I craved predictability. But

predictability was the first casualty when Mrs. Gable

moved in next door.

From the moment she arrived, there was an

undeniable oddity about her. She was a woman of

indeterminate age, with silver hair that hung in wild,

unkempt waves around a face lined with a lifetime of

intense expressions. While the rest of us spent our

weekends tending to petunias and washing our sedans,

Mrs. Gable spent her time pacing the perimeter of her

property. I had often caught her standing completely still,

her eyes fixed unnervingly on the side of my house. At first,

I dismissed it as the eccentric behavior of an elderly

woman adjusting to a new environment. I offered her a

polite wave when we crossed paths, which she rarely

returned, opting instead for a lingering, penetrating stare

that left me feeling inexplicably exposed.

It all escalated on a crisp Tuesday morning in late

October. I stepped out onto my front porch, mug of coffee

in hand, ready to breathe in the autumn air. My foot almost

collided with it before my brain registered its presence.

There, sitting perfectly upright on the center of my

welcome mat, was a doll. It was not a mass-produced

plastic toy, but something handcrafted and profoundly

disturbing. Its body was fashioned from coarse, tightly

woven burlap, stitched together with thick, black twine.

The eyes were two mismatched buttons—one a dull brass,

the other a cracked porcelain white. It emanated a faint,

earthy scent, like dried herbs and damp soil.

My initial reaction was a mixture of confusion and

mild amusement. Perhaps a neighborhood child had

dropped it? But as I knelt down to examine it closer, a cold

dread began to pool in my stomach. The doll had not been

dropped casually. It was positioned deliberately, its small,

stubby arms arranged in an open gesture, as if presenting

itself to the door. I reached out and picked it up. The

texture was rough against my skin, and to my surprise, it

possessed a surprising weight, as if stuffed with sand or

dense clay.

I turned it over, and that was when I saw the symbol.

Carved—or rather, burned—into the wooden disc that

served as the doll's chest was an intricate, jagged emblem.

It looked like a series of overlapping triangles intersected

by a single, harsh vertical line. It was not a doodle. It was

precise, deliberate, and undeniably ominous. I stood there

on my porch, the autumn wind suddenly feeling much

colder, and looked instinctively toward Mrs. Gable's house.
