Then he contacted an attorney.

Her name was Rachel Bennett.

Rachel listened without interruption.

When Daniel finished, she asked him to send everything.

"I'll review it."

"Do you think this is enough?"

"For a conversation? Yes. For a courtroom? We need more."

Daniel sighed.

"How much more?"

"Chain of evidence. Original recordings. Dates. Photos. Maintenance records. Any communication with the HOA. Anything showing a possible motive."

Daniel opened his folder.

"I have all of that."

Rachel paused.

"Then don't confront her."

"Why?"

"Because people who believe they control the situation sometimes become careless when they think they're winning."

Daniel understood.

He stopped looking for revenge.

He started looking for proof.

The monthly HOA meeting was held in a community clubhouse decorated with framed photographs of neighborhood entrances.

Victoria sat at the front table.

She looked calm.

Daniel sat near the back with Rachel Bennett.

The meeting began with routine matters.

Landscaping.

Parking.

A proposed playground renovation.

Then Victoria cleared her throat.

"We have an ongoing compliance concern involving Lot 184."

Daniel knew immediately.

His house.

Victoria continued.

"The homeowner has repeatedly refused reasonable inspections and has maintained an unauthorized pool configuration."

Daniel raised his hand.

Victoria ignored him.

Rachel stood.

"I represent Mr. Mercer."

The room became quiet.

Victoria stared at her.

Rachel placed a folder on the table.

"We would like the association to provide the legal basis for each alleged violation."

Victoria shifted in her chair.

"We're discussing internal HOA matters."

"Correct," Rachel said. "Which is why documentation should be available."

A board member named Harold Pierce looked uncomfortable.

He had been on the board for nine years.

He asked, "What exactly are you requesting?"

"Inspection notices. Violation records. Board votes. Communications concerning Mr. Mercer's property."

Victoria interrupted.

"This is unnecessary."

Rachel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because the homeowner has already demonstrated a pattern of noncompliance."

Daniel opened his folder.

"I'd like to add something."

Victoria frowned.

Daniel placed photographs on the table.

Each photograph showed pieces of glass recovered from his pool.

Monday.

Tuesday.

Wednesday.

Friday.

Then he placed a printed still image from the security footage.

A hooded person beside the pool.

Victoria stared at it.

Daniel said nothing.

Neither did Rachel.

Finally Harold asked:

"Are you saying someone entered your property?"

"Yes."

"Do you know who?"

Daniel looked directly at Victoria.

"I have an idea."

Victoria stood.

"This is harassment."

Rachel replied calmly.

"No accusation has been made."

Victoria's face reddened.

The meeting ended ten minutes later.

But as people left the room, Daniel noticed something.

Harold remained seated.

He was staring at the photographs.

And he looked worried.

Two days later, Harold Pierce called Daniel.

"I need to talk to you."

They met at a coffee shop outside the subdivision.

Harold looked exhausted.

"I've been on that board for nine years," he said. "I've never seen anything like this."

"Like what?"

"The records."

Harold lowered his voice.

"Victoria controls almost everything."

Daniel waited.

"She approves vendors. She recommends contractors. She decides which violations get pursued. Sometimes she even tells the management company what letters to send before the board votes."

"Is that allowed?"

"Not necessarily."

Harold handed Daniel a USB drive.

"I made copies."

Daniel looked at it.

"What is this?"

"Meeting records."

Daniel plugged it into his laptop that evening.

Inside were spreadsheets.

Complaint logs.

Invoices.

Emails.

And a folder marked:
