situation with grave seriousness. Attempted assault with a
caustic substance was a severe felony. They immediately
dispatched a unit to David’s residence to apprehend the
suspect.
David woke up to the sound of furious pounding on
his front door. Glancing at his bedside clock, he saw
it was barely 6:30 AM. He threw on a bathrobe, his mind
groggy and confused, and made his way to the entryway.
When he opened the door, he was startled to find two
uniformed police officers standing on his porch, their
expressions stern and uncompromising. Before he could
even offer a greeting, they demanded to know his
whereabouts the previous night and instructed him to step
outside.
Confused and increasingly alarmed, David
complied. The officers questioned him aggressively about
his relationship with Evelyn Thorne and whether he
possessed any industrial chemicals. David, bewildered,
explained that he had been asleep since midnight and had
not seen Evelyn in weeks, save for a fleeting glance at the
mailbox. It was then that the officers informed him of
Evelyn’s severe injuries and the horrifying accusations she
had leveled against him from her hospital bed. They
escorted him to his backyard to investigate the "scene of
the crime."
The sight that greeted them was bizarre and
unsettling. The crystal-clear water of the pool had turned a
sickly, cloudy green, and a harsh, unnatural chemical odor
hung thickly in the morning air. A plastic, industrial jug lay
discarded on its side near the deep end, a dark stain of
spilled liquid spreading across the stone coping. The
officers immediately marked the area as a crime scene,
reading David his rights and informing him that he was the
primary suspect in a felony assault investigation. David
stood in his backyard, staring at the ruined oasis he had
built, a cold dread washing over him as he realized the
sheer magnitude of Evelyn’s malicious lie. She was
attempting to destroy his life.
