Bear picked up his phone.
"Then we're going to fix that."
The Call
Bear called his club.
The voice on the other end immediately changed when it heard him.
"What happened?"
Bear explained everything.
The coffee.
The bat.
The fall.
The child.
Then he said the sentence that silenced everyone.
"She's seven years old. No home. No coat. And she took a hit meant for my head because she thought I was Santa."
Nobody spoke.
Then the club president asked:
"Where is she?"
"Right here."
"Is she safe?"
"For now."
A pause.
Then the president's voice hardened.
"She won't be alone again."
Bear closed his eyes.
Engines were already starting somewhere beyond the hospital.
"We're rolling."
Bear looked at Daisy.
"Looks like you made some friends."
"How many?"
He smiled.
"You're going to have to count."
Outside, motorcycles began gathering.
One.
Five.
Twenty.
A hundred.
The number kept growing.
Five Hundred Riders
Christmas morning arrived beneath a gray sky.
Bear left the hospital with his leg badly bruised and Daisy beside him.
She wore an oversized coat.
Her teddy bear was tucked beneath one arm.
Raven, one of Bear's longtime friends, waited for them in a pickup truck.
She was covered in tattoos and wore the same black leather vest.
"Morning, Bear," she said.
"You look like roadkill."
Bear smiled.
"Good to see you too."
Daisy climbed inside.
As they approached the gas station, she noticed the motorcycles.
At first, she saw twenty.
Then fifty.
Then hundreds.
The highway disappeared behind chrome and black leather.
Engines rumbled through the snow.
Five hundred bikers had come.
Not to start a war.
Not to destroy the town.
They had come because one little girl had reminded them what loyalty meant.
When Daisy stepped from the truck, the crowd became quiet.
Hundreds of hardened men and women looked at her.
No one laughed.
No one mocked her.
They simply nodded.
Respectfully.
The club president, a massive man named Hawk, stepped forward.
Then he did something Daisy never expected.
He dropped to one knee.
"You must be Daisy."
She nodded.
Hawk smiled.
"Bear told us what you did."
"I thought he was Santa."
A quiet wave of laughter moved through the crowd.
Hawk glanced at Bear.
"Apparently you've been keeping secrets."
Then Raven brought forward a small leather vest.
It was made specifically for Daisy.
