Karen received the letter.

Then came silence.

For ten days.

The pool work continued.

The new surface looked beautiful.

The water was still absent.

I scheduled the refill for the following week.

I thought the dispute was finally ending.

Then, on a Thursday morning, my doorbell rang.

I looked through the window.

Karen stood on the porch.

Two police officers stood behind her.

My stomach dropped.

I opened the door.

One officer introduced himself.

"Good morning. I'm Officer Davis. This is Officer Reynolds."

Karen stepped forward.

"Tell them what you did."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"You drained my pool."

The officers looked at each other.

I almost laughed.

But I didn't.

I stepped aside.

"Please come in."

Karen followed.

I led everyone to the kitchen.

The empty pool was visible through the glass doors.

Officer Davis looked outside.

"Ms. Fielding claims you damaged property that she says she has an ownership interest in."

I nodded.

"I understand."

Karen interrupted.

"It's not just an ownership interest. I've been using it for almost two years."

Officer Davis looked at her.

"That doesn't establish ownership."

"But she gave me permission."

"Permission to use it?"

"Yes."

"Did she revoke that permission?"

Karen hesitated.

"She sent me letters."

"Then she revoked it."

Karen shook her head.

"You don't understand."

Officer Reynolds looked at me.

"Do you have documentation?"

I smiled.

"Yes."

I opened my laptop.

The folder was ready.

I didn't know it yet, but this was the moment everything changed.

Karen had brought the police expecting them to hear her story.

Instead, they were about to see mine.

And mine had timestamps.

I placed the laptop on the kitchen table.

Officer Davis pulled out a chair.

Officer Reynolds stood beside him.

Karen remained near the doorway.

I opened the first folder.

"This is the deed."

Officer Davis read it.

"My name."

"Yes."

"Property address?"

"Fourteen Willow Creek Lane."

He nodded.

I opened the next document.

"This is the pool installation contract."

The contractor's name was clearly printed.

My name was beneath it.

The installation date was twelve years earlier.

The property address matched.

"This is the permit."

Then the inspection certificate.

Then the insurance declaration.

Then years of maintenance invoices.

Officer Reynolds leaned closer.

"How long have you been maintaining it?"

"Twelve years."

"Any payments from Ms. Fielding?"

"No."

I opened the folder containing bank records and contractor invoices.

"Everything is paid by me."

Karen crossed her arms.

"I helped."

Officer Davis looked at her.

"How?"

"I bought supplies."

"What supplies?"

"Cleaning supplies. Toys."

"Did you pay for installation?"

"No."

"Maintenance?"

"No."

"Repairs?"

"No."

"Insurance?"

"No."

He nodded.

"Then those purchases don't establish ownership."

Karen's face reddened.

I continued.

"This is the fence repair history."

I showed photographs of the damaged boards.

Then the contractor invoice.

Then the first security recording.

Karen entering through the fence.

Her children behind her.

Officer Davis watched.

"Date?"

I told him.

He looked at Karen.

"Did you enter through the fence?"

She didn't answer.

I opened the next recording.

Then another.

Then another.

The pattern became obvious.

Karen and her children had repeatedly entered my yard after permission had been withdrawn.

Officer Reynolds asked:

"How many incidents?"

"At least seventeen that I documented."

Karen snapped:

"Because you refused to talk to me!"

I looked at her.

"I sent you a letter."

"You were rude."

"I sent a certified notice."

"You made me feel unwelcome."

"That was the point."

She stared at me.

Officer Davis turned toward her.

"Ma'am, whether you felt welcome isn't the issue."

Karen looked stunned.

I opened the certified mail receipt.

"This is the notice revoking permission."

Officer Davis read it.

"She signed for it?"

"Yes."

Karen shook her head.

"I thought it was just a warning."

Officer Davis looked at the document.

"It clearly says permission is revoked."

"I didn't agree."

"You don't have to agree to a property owner revoking permission."

Karen's eyes flashed.

"But the children had been using it."

Officer Reynolds spoke gently.

"That doesn't give them a continuing legal right."

I opened the next folder.

"The pool drainage."

I showed the contractor's invoice.

The maintenance recommendation.

The resurfacing estimate.

The photographs before and after.

"This is why the pool was drained."

Officer Davis studied the documents.

"So the pool was already scheduled for maintenance?"

"Yes."

"When did you schedule it?"

"Several weeks before I drained it."

"Any connection to her complaint?"

"No."

Karen laughed.

"That's convenient."

I turned toward her.

"You've been recording this?"

Officer Davis asked.

"Yes."

He looked at the laptop.

"Do you have the original files?"

"Yes."

"Cloud backup?"

"Yes."

"Good."

He turned to Karen.

"Do you have any documentation showing ownership?"

Karen opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Any agreement?"

"No."

"Any deed?"

"No."

"Any payment records?"

"No."

"Any easement?"

"No."

"Then what exactly are you asking us to enforce?"

Karen looked toward me.

"I want my pool back."

Officer Davis closed his notebook.

"Ms. Fielding, I need you to understand something."

She waited.

"From what I've seen, this is not your pool."

Her face collapsed slightly.

"It's not?"

"No."

"But she let us use it."

"That is permission."

"And she took it away."

"Yes."

"That's unfair."

Officer Reynolds said:

"Unfair is not the same thing as unlawful."

The room became silent.

I felt something loosen in my chest.

Not because I wanted Karen embarrassed.

Because I wanted reality recognized.

Officer Davis stood.

"I've seen enough documentation to conclude that the pool is on Ms. Pemberton's property and that she has the ownership records."
