"This is going to make the kids really disappointed."

"I'm sorry."

Karen walked away.

For several weeks, nothing happened.

Then Evelyn noticed the fence again.

One board was loose.

She tightened it.

A week later, two boards were loose.

She replaced them.

Then she installed a camera.

The camera showed something she hadn't expected.

Karen's children were not climbing over the fence.

Karen herself was opening it.

She would wait until Evelyn left for work.

She would remove a temporary latch.

The children would enter.

Sometimes they brought friends.

Sometimes they brought floats.

Once, Karen brought a cooler.

Evelyn sat at her kitchen table that evening and watched the footage twice.

She didn't feel angry.

Not yet.

She felt disappointed.

The next morning she began a folder on her computer.

She called it:

POOL ACCESS — DOCUMENTATION

Inside, she created subfolders.

Property.

Installation.

Maintenance.

Security.

Communications.

Unauthorized Access.

She scanned the original pool contract.

She found the permit.

She found the inspection record.

She downloaded insurance documents.

She collected maintenance invoices.

She photographed the pool and fence.

Then she reviewed every camera clip.

She discovered that Karen had entered the pool area nine times in one month.

Evelyn created a spreadsheet.

Date.

Time.

Entry method.

Number of people.

Duration.

Evidence.

It was the sort of thing only an accountant would think to do.

But Evelyn knew something important:

Arguments become messy.

Records don't.

She sent Karen a formal letter.

It wasn't threatening.

It wasn't insulting.

It simply stated that all previous informal permission to use the pool was revoked.

It explained that further access would be unauthorized.

It requested that Karen stop entering the property through the fence.

Evelyn sent the letter by certified mail.

Three days later, the delivery confirmation arrived.

Karen had signed for it.

For almost a month, there were no incidents.

Evelyn thought perhaps the problem had finally ended.

Then came the Saturday morning incident.

It was barely eight o'clock when Evelyn heard splashing.

She walked outside.

Karen's two children were in the pool.

Karen was sitting beside it.

Two other children were swimming.

Evelyn stopped at the edge of the patio.

"Everyone out."

Karen looked over.

"Good morning."

"Everyone out."

Karen stood.

"We're almost finished."

"No. You're leaving now."

Karen's face hardened.

"You don't have to talk to me like that."

"I sent you a letter."

"I know."

"It said you no longer had permission."

Karen shrugged.

"I don't think that's fair."

"It's not about fair."

"Then what is it about?"

"My property."

Karen stared at her.

Then she smiled in a way Evelyn had never seen before.

"Okay."

The children climbed out.

Karen gathered their belongings.

Before leaving, she looked back at Evelyn.

"You'll regret treating people this way."

Evelyn didn't answer.

She waited until the gate closed.

Then she called the police.

The responding officer listened carefully.

Evelyn showed him the footage.

She showed him the letter.

She showed him the delivery confirmation.

The officer asked several questions.

"Does she own this property?"

"No."

"Any easement?"

"No."

"Any written agreement granting access?"

"No."

"Any shared pool agreement?"

"No."

He nodded.

"I'd advise her not to return without permission."

Evelyn thanked him.

After he left, she stood in the backyard.

The pool water was still moving slightly from the children's swimming.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then she made a decision.

She would drain the pool.

Not because of Karen.

Not as punishment.

Not to make a statement.

The pool needed maintenance.

The water chemistry had been repeatedly disturbed.

The surface needed inspection.

The interior needed refinishing.

It was the right time.

The following week, the pool service company arrived.

The pumps ran.

The water level dropped.

By sunset, the pool was empty.

Evelyn looked at the dry basin and felt something close to relief.

She thought the conflict was over.

She was wrong.

Karen came the next afternoon.

Evelyn was working at her dining-room table when someone knocked.

She looked through the glass.

Karen stood outside.

Evelyn opened the door.

"Hi."

Karen didn't return the greeting.

"Why did you drain the pool?"

"Maintenance."

"You can't do that."

Evelyn blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"You drained it."

"Yes."

"It's my pool too."

For several seconds, Evelyn simply stared at her.

Then she said:

"No, Karen. It isn't."

Karen's expression became angry.

"The kids have used that pool for two summers."

"With permission."

"They've practically grown up in it."

"That doesn't make it yours."

Karen pointed toward the backyard.

"I've bought equipment for that pool."

"You bought a few floats."

"And cleaning supplies."

"Those were never requested."

"I've taken care of it."

"You've used it."

Karen shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"No, you don't."

Karen stepped closer.

"You can't just destroy something that other people have relied on."

Evelyn's voice remained calm.

"It's not destroyed."

"You drained it."

"Because I'm repairing it."

"You should have asked me."

Evelyn almost laughed.

Instead she said:

"Why would I ask you?"

Karen's face turned red.

She walked away.

Evelyn watched her cross the driveway.

She thought that was the end.

Then, seven days later, there was another knock.

This time Evelyn heard voices.

She opened the door.

Karen stood there.

Behind her were two police officers.

For the first time since the entire situation began, Evelyn felt genuinely stunned.

Karen pointed toward the backyard.

"That's the pool."

One of the officers looked at Evelyn.

"Ma'am, we received a complaint regarding property damage."

Evelyn looked from the officer to Karen.
