HOPE AMELIA BENNETT.
His face hardened.
“What is that?”
I stared at him.
“That is our daughter’s name.”
“My daughter is not using your maiden name.”
“You weren’t here to name her.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Claire, you’re emotional. We all understand. But you will correct this before the birth certificate is filed.”
I looked at the woman who had celebrated while her granddaughter struggled to breathe.
Then I looked at Ryan.
He was not ashamed.
He was angry.
Not because I had almost died.
Because I had made a decision without him.
“You need to leave,” I said.
Ryan laughed once. “You don’t get to remove me from my own child’s hospital room.”
A hospital security officer appeared behind him.
“Actually,” the officer said, “the patient does.”
Ryan turned.
Dr. Patel stood in the doorway.
“She has requested that both of you leave. Given her medical condition, any further disturbance will be treated as a threat to patient safety.”
Evelyn’s face turned red.
“You have no idea who our family is.”
Dr. Patel did not move.
“I know exactly who my patient is.”
Security escorted them toward the doors.
Ryan looked back at me.
“This isn’t over.”

I held Hope’s tiny hand.
