Within ten minutes, the wail of sirens shattered the rural silence. Two county sheriff's cruisers came tearing down the paved road of Whispering Pines, their tires screeching as they came to a halt right at the boundary line of Caleb's property. The intense, stroboscopic flashing of the red and blue police lights instantly transformed the environment.
The lights cut through the darkness, casting erratic, frantic reflections against the muddy walls of the trench and washing over Caleb's stoic face. The commotion did exactly what Patricia had hoped it would do: it drew an audience. Across the property line, doors opened, and residents of the wealthy subdivision stepped out onto their manicured lawns, gathering in a small, whispering crowd in the shadows to watch the spectacle unfold.
Three officers stepped out of the cruisers, resting their hands cautiously on their duty belts as they assessed the strange scene. Patricia immediately sprinted toward them, instantly adopting the persona of a terrified, victimized citizen. She pointed a trembling finger at Caleb, who was calmly climbing out of the trench, his heavy boots sinking into the wet earth.
"Officers! Thank God!" Patricia cried out, her voice dripping with manufactured panic. "This man is completely out of control! He's digging up the property line, he's threatening me, and he refuses to comply with the neighborhood safety ordinances! I need him removed immediately!"
The lead officer, a burly man with a thick mustache, approached the trench cautiously. He looked at the massive, muddy hole, then at Caleb, who was standing tall and wiping the dirt from his hands with a rag. The officer then looked at Patricia, clearly trying to piece together the absurdity of a 911 call over landscaping.
Sensing the police presence was giving her absolute power, Patricia marched back to the edge of the trench, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the officer. The flashing blue and red lights illuminated her sharp, cruel features. She thrust the clipboard forward, holding a pen out toward Caleb. She wanted to humiliate him in front of the police and the watching neighborhood. She wanted him to submit.
