"They played you, Mark," I said softly. "They knew you hated me. They knew you wouldn't look past my name on those accounts. David is leaving for Zurich tomorrow night with the rest of the money. If we don't stop him, I go to prison, and the men who killed your mother get away with millions."

Vance slowly closed the ledger. The muscle in his jaw was ticking. "What's the plan?"

The plan was suicide, legally speaking. We needed a confession on tape, and we needed it in front of witnesses who couldn't be bought.

David was hosting a "farewell and restructuring" dinner at a private country club, surrounded by the very investors he was stealing from. I walked into the banquet hall wearing a stunning red dress, looking every bit the unbothered, wealthy socialite. The room went dead silent. David’s face drained of color as I walked right up to his table, where Chief Keller was sitting beside him.

"Evelyn," David hissed, standing up to block me. "You are violating your bail. Leave now before I have the Chief arrest you."

"Arrest me for what, David?" I said, my voice carrying across the silent room. I tapped the microphone hidden in my diamond necklace. "For holding the accounts you set up? I have the ledger, David. I know about Zurich."

David panicked. His arrogance took over. "You have nothing! Nobody will believe a disgraced judge over me! I built this city, Evelyn, and I paid good money to make sure you take the fall for it!"

He realized what he said a second too late. Chief Keller lunged forward to grab me, but the doors to the banquet hall violently slammed open.

Officer Vance marched in, but this time, he wasn't alone. He had the FBI with him. They had been listening to the wire the entire time.

"Chief Keller," Vance said, his voice ringing with a cold, hard justice. "You're under arrest for corruption, extortion, and conspiracy."
