Not fear.

Responsibility.

He was no longer riding for himself.

The Town of Mercy

They reached Mercy Crossing after dark.

Clara took them to the sheriff.

Sheriff Amos Bell was an old man with silver hair and a scar across his cheek.

He listened carefully.

When Elias mentioned the name Silas Rusk, the sheriff's expression changed.

"You should have stayed gone, Ward."

"You know me?"

"I knew the man you were."

"What does that mean?"

Bell looked at Clara.

"Your father knew the truth."

Clara stiffened.

"What truth?"

Bell sighed.

"Thomas Bennett was one of the men who helped investigate the military robbery."

Elias stared.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was afraid."

"For ten years?"

"Fear doesn't care how old it gets."

Bell opened a drawer.

He removed a letter.

"Your father left this with me."

Clara unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

She read aloud.

"If Elias Ward ever returns, tell him the money was never the real prize. The real prize was the land."

Elias looked at the sheriff.

"Why?"

Bell shook his head.

"Because whoever controls the water controls the territory."

Clara understood.

Rusk wasn't simply buying ranches.

He was building an empire.

And the Bennett spring was the final piece.

That night, Elias sat alone outside the sheriff's office.

Clara joined him.

"You can leave," she said.

"I know."

"You've done more than anyone else."

"I haven't done enough."

She sat beside him.

"Why?"

Elias looked toward the dark street.

"Because ten years ago, I ran."

"From Rusk?"

"From everything."

Clara was silent.

Then she said:

"Maybe you're not running anymore."

Elias looked at her.

For once, he didn't have an answer.

Rusk Arrives

Caleb Rusk arrived at noon.

He rode into Mercy Crossing with twelve men.

He wore a black coat and a silver watch.

He looked more like a banker than a cattleman.

He entered the sheriff's office without knocking.

"Miss Bennett."

Clara stood.

"Mr. Rusk."

"I came to make you an offer."

"You've already made it."

"Then hear the final one."

He placed a paper on the desk.

"Five thousand dollars."

Clara didn't touch it.

"No."

"Ten thousand."

"No."

"Twenty."

She stared at him.

"You think everything has a price."

"Everything does."

Elias stepped forward.

Rusk looked at him.

Recognition flashed in his eyes.

"Elias Ward."

"Caleb Rusk."

"You've aged."

"So have you."

Rusk smiled.

"Not as much as you."

Elias said nothing.

Rusk leaned closer.

"My brother sends his regards."

The room went silent.

Elias's hand moved toward his revolver.

Sheriff Bell stepped between them.

"Not here."

Rusk smiled.

"I didn't come to fight."

He turned toward Clara.

"I came to warn you."

"About what?"

"Your father died owing me money."

Clara's face hardened.

"That's a lie."

"Then prove it."

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked at Elias.

"You spent ten years running from a dead man."

Rusk smiled.

"You should have kept running."

The Ambush

The attack came two nights later.

Rusk's men surrounded the ranch after midnight.

Elias woke when Ranger kicked the stall door.

He grabbed his rifle.

A match flared outside.

Then another.

Oil lanterns.

"They're going to burn the barn," Clara whispered.

Elias looked at her.

"Take the horses."

"What about you?"

"Go."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Clara."

"I'm not leaving you."

He stared at her.

"That's a dangerous habit."

"So is yours."

The barn doors exploded inward.

Flames spread across the hay.

Elias fired.

One man fell.

Another fired back.

Clara shot from the loft.

Together, they drove the attackers away.
