"Where?"

"In the parking lot."

"When?"

"About fifteen minutes before the police arrived."

"Was she alone?"

"No."

"Who was with her?"

Clara looked at Dr. Hart.

Then she pointed.

"That man."

A gasp moved through the courtroom.

Dr. Hart's attorney stood.

"This is absurd."

Judge Whitmore raised his hand.

"Sit down."

Marcus approached the witness.

"What happened next?"

Clara swallowed.

"They argued."

"About what?"

"I couldn't hear everything."

"But?"

"I heard Dr. Hart say, 'If this fails, we both lose everything.'"

Dr. Hart stood.

"That's a lie!"

The judge slammed his gavel.

"Sit down!"

Marcus stepped back.

The courtroom had become chaos.

But Marcus remained calm.

He knew something now.

The burglary wasn't the real story.

The burglary was a cover.

The real story was money.

And Dr. Hart's business partner was involved.

Marcus spent the next three hours reviewing corporate records.

He found shell companies.

Fake invoices.

Missing funds.

And finally, a transaction connecting Dr. Hart's business partner to a bank account controlled by Officer Bennett's brother.

It wasn't proof of everything.

But it was enough to demand a deeper investigation.

When Marcus presented it, Judge Whitmore ordered prosecutors to turn the matter over to state investigators.

Nia's charges were suspended pending investigation.

As the courtroom emptied, Judge Whitmore approached Marcus.

"You understand what you've uncovered?"

Marcus nodded.

"Some of it."

"You may have saved your sister."

Marcus looked toward Nia.

"I wasn't trying to save her."

The judge frowned.

"What were you trying to do?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Make somebody listen."

Judge Whitmore looked at him for several seconds.

Then he said something Marcus would remember for the rest of his life.

"Sometimes that's where justice begins.

Three days later, Marcus received a phone call.

It was from the state investigator.

There was more evidence.

Much more.

Officer Bennett had been receiving unexplained payments.

Dr. Hart's business partner had been moving company money through shell accounts.

And someone had attempted to destroy surveillance footage.

But one question remained.

Why had Nia been chosen?

Marcus couldn't answer it.

Then his father found an old envelope.

It belonged to their mother.

Inside was a photograph.

Their mother had been working on a civil lawsuit involving Dr. Hart's company.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

His mother had been investigating financial fraud before she died.

Nia had unknowingly inherited some of her mother's files.

And one of those files contained a list of transactions that could expose the entire scheme.

Marcus realized the arrest might not have been random.

Nia had been targeted because someone believed she had the documents.

But where were they?

Marcus returned home.

He searched his mother's old office.

Nothing.

Then he remembered the briefcase.

The battered leather briefcase had belonged to his mother.

He opened every compartment.

Receipts.

Pens.

Old legal notes.

Then, hidden behind the lining, he found a tiny memory card.

Marcus stared at it.

His hands trembled.

He inserted it into the computer.

There were dozens of files.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

And one video.

The video showed Dr. Hart meeting Officer Bennett's brother.

They discussed money.

Then they mentioned Nia.

Marcus watched the entire recording.

He didn't celebrate.

He didn't smile.

He simply whispered:

"Mom."

His father came into the room.

"What is it?"

Marcus turned the screen toward him.

His father watched.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Mom kept it."

His father sat down.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then he said:

"Your mother knew."

Marcus nodded.

"She was building a case."

"Then why didn't she finish it?"

His father looked at the screen.

"Because she got sick."

Marcus felt tears in his eyes.

For years he had believed his mother's unfinished work was simply unfinished.

Now he understood.

She had left it behind for someone to continue.

But Marcus was sixteen.

He didn't want to be that person.

He wanted to be a normal teenager.

He wanted homework.

Friends.

Basketball.

A future that didn't involve courtrooms.

But his sister was still fighting.

And someone had tried to destroy their family.

So Marcus copied the evidence.

He gave one copy to the state investigator.

One to Judge Whitmore under seal.

And one to his father.

Then he deleted nothing.

The final hearing was scheduled for Friday.

This time, the courtroom was packed.

The judge entered.

The prosecutor stood.

Nia sat beside Marcus.

Dr. Hart was present.

Officer Bennett was present.

And for the first time, Marcus noticed something strange.

The judge wasn't looking at him as a child.

He was looking at him as someone whose words mattered.
