Claire folded her arms.
“That doesn't answer my question.”
For the first time, Ryder almost smiled.
“No,” he said. “It sounds like he raised you right.”
He told her he would come to her house that evening.
Then he said something stranger.
“Don't take the jacket off.”
“Why?”
“You've already been seen.”
“What message does keeping it on send?”
Ryder looked at her for a long moment.
“That Walter Dawson's blood still runs in the right direction.”
Then he turned and walked away.
Claire stood alone in the hallway.
Her best friend Maya appeared beside her.
“What was that?”
Claire watched the front doors close behind Ryder.
“I don't know yet,” she said.
But somewhere inside her, the answer had already begun.
Her grandfather had not simply left her a jacket.
He had left her something unfinished.
And now someone had noticed.
The Secret Walter Dawson Took to His Grave
Sandra Dawson arrived home early that evening.
She had already received a call from the school.
When Claire told her Ryder Cole was coming, the color disappeared from her mother's face.
“You know him.”
Sandra sat down slowly.
“I know the name.”
“Grandpa told me to trust him.”
Her mother looked at the jacket.
For a long time, neither of them spoke.
Then Sandra finally told her the truth.
Walter Dawson had lived another life before Claire was born.
A life Sandra knew almost nothing about.
A life he had deliberately buried.
Ryder arrived at 6:17.
Sandra made it clear that he had ten minutes to explain himself.
Ryder didn't waste any.
“Your father,” he told Sandra, “was one of the men who helped establish the founding structure of the organization.”
Sandra stared at him.
Claire listened.
“There were seven founding seats,” Ryder continued. “Each one carried authority over internal law, succession, and leadership.”
“And what does that have to do with my daughter?” Sandra asked.
Ryder looked directly at Claire.
“Walter's seat transferred when he died.”
Sandra slowly shook her head.
“No.”
“By founding law, it passes to the oldest direct descendant willing to claim it.”
Claire felt the room become suddenly smaller.
Sandra understood before Claire did.
“To me?”
“No.”
Ryder looked at Claire.
“To her.”
Claire was twelve years old.
And according to a law written decades before she was born, she had inherited a seat of power inside an organization she barely understood.
But there was a problem.
A dangerous man named Victor Cross had become president.
Walter Dawson had opposed him.
Raymond Cade, another powerful figure, had opposed him too—and then supposedly died.
Ryder revealed the truth.
Raymond Cade was alive.
Hidden.
Waiting.
And Walter had known that one day Claire might need him.
“Victor Cross knows your grandfather had a granddaughter,” Ryder said.
Sandra's face tightened.
“Does he know about Claire?”
Ryder looked toward the window.
“Not until this morning.”
Claire suddenly understood.
The jacket.
The school.
The photographs.
Someone had seen her.
Someone had sent word.
By lunchtime, Victor Cross knew her face.
And he knew Walter Dawson's heir had appeared.
Claire touched the old leather on her shoulders.
The jacket had not changed.
But everything around her had.
The Choice to Stand
Ryder explained the situation.
Walter's seat could not remain unclaimed forever.
Claire had only a limited amount of time before it became permanently vacant.
Victor Cross wanted control.
If Claire claimed the seat, she could become the one obstacle standing between Cross and complete power.
Sandra wanted to protect her.
Of course she did.
