"If you don't do something to stop her right now, then I will!" Caroline threatened, her face flushing red. Elena maintained her composure, stepping slightly into Caroline's path. "Please do not confront another customer on the floor, ma'am. Allow us to handle store operations." Caroline pulled her high-end smartphone out of her designer coat pocket, her fingers tapping the screen with aggressive force. "I'm not going to confront her," Caroline spat, raising the phone to her ear. "I'm calling the police right now to report an active theft in progress."

Simone was standing calmly at the main cash register on the second floor when the two uniformed officers arrived. She had successfully secured the blue dress for Maya—the shade was perfect, and she knew her daughter would be thrilled. The missing third garment, the white blouse, was currently hanging neatly on a staging rack behind the fitting-room counter because Simone had asked the attendant to locate a smaller size from the stockroom. Simone was completely unaware that this mundane retail interaction had been twisted into a criminal narrative. She was simply waiting for the cashier to wrap the silk dress in delicate tissue paper.

"Ma'am?" a deep, authoritative voice called out from behind her. Simone turned around gracefully, holding her wallet in one hand. Standing a few feet away were two uniformed city police officers. The lead officer was tall, broad-shouldered, and appeared to be in his late thirties, his expression stern and unreadable. His polished brass nameplate read Officer Daniel Hayes. A second, younger officer stood slightly behind him, his hand resting casually near his utility belt. Simone looked at them, then glanced around the quiet department store floor. "Can I help you, officers?" she asked pleasantly.

"We received a direct dispatch report about a possible shoplifting incident on this floor," Officer Hayes stated, his eyes scanning her posture. The cashier immediately stopped scanning the dress, freezing in place as the tension in the room escalated. Simone looked directly into Hayes's eyes, her tone perfectly even. "And?" "We need to ask you a few questions regarding the items in your possession," Hayes replied. Right on cue, Caroline Whitmore stepped out from behind the security pillar, her chin held high and a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. Simone observed the woman's satisfied demeanor, and in a single sharp moment of clarity, the entire absurdity of the situation clicked into place. "She called you?" Simone asked, pointing a subtle finger toward Caroline.

Caroline stepped forward, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "I saw what you did! You thought nobody was paying attention, didn't you?" Simone studied the woman with cool, clinical detachment, unimpressed by the theatrical display. "And what, exactly, did you see me do?" Simone asked calmly. "You went into that fitting room with three high-end pieces and walked out carrying only two!" Caroline declared, looking around at the gathering store employees as if awaiting applause. "Yes," Simone responded plainly. "Because the third item is currently hanging behind the fitting-room desk while the attendant checks the back room for a size six."
