Within months, she was the HOA president.

After that, everything changed.

Trash cans couldn't remain outside after seven in the evening.

Holiday decorations couldn't stay up more than ten days.

Driveways had to be pressure-washed every six months.

Children weren't allowed to ride bicycles on certain streets.

And homeowners received fines for the smallest things.

Karen called it "maintaining property values."

Everyone else called it bullying.

I stayed out of it.

I had purchased my house several years earlier and preferred a quiet life.

My backyard was my sanctuary.

The pool had been there when I bought the property, and I had renovated it myself.

I paid for its maintenance.

I paid the property taxes.

I paid every HOA fee on time.

Most importantly, the property was legally mine.

But Karen had become obsessed with controlling it.

It started with a complaint about the pool furniture.

Then the landscaping.

Then the fence.

Finally, she discovered something she couldn't tolerate.

My pool was nicer than the neighborhood's community pool.

Karen wanted everyone to use the HOA pool.

I preferred mine.

That apparently offended her.

The first letter arrived six months earlier.

NOTICE OF VIOLATION.

The second threatened a fine.

The third claimed that my pool created "an unauthorized community amenity."

That phrase made me laugh.

So I ignored it.

Karen didn't.

She escalated.

And now she had brought her husband to my front gate.

"Give Me the Keys"

Karen held out her hand.

"The keys."

I shook my head.

"I already told you no."

"You're violating the HOA agreement."

"No, Karen. I'm violating your interpretation of the HOA agreement."

Her cheeks turned red.

"This isn't a debate."

"No."

I looked directly at Daniel.

"This is trespassing if you enter my property without permission."

Daniel's expression changed.

He clearly wasn't comfortable.

"Sir, we're not trying to cause a problem."

"Then don't."

Karen interrupted.

"Daniel, just take the keys."

I looked at him.

"Are you actually going to do that?"

He hesitated.

"Mrs. Mercer says the association owns them."

"Then she should provide proof."

Karen immediately pulled out a document.

"I have it right here."

I took the paper.

I read it.

Then I smiled.

"This says the HOA owns the community pool keys."

Karen nodded triumphantly.

"Exactly."

I held up the paper.

"This is my property."

She stared at me.

"What?"

"This document doesn't mention my house."

Karen snatched the paper back.

"That's not what I meant."

"I know what you meant."
