Her grandson had been asking for one for months. She had refused to buy it because she considered it a waste of money. When she saw Daniel's unopened console, a different thought had formed.

Why should a child who already had everything get another expensive toy?

Karen repeated that question until it sounded like justification.

At 1:17 p.m., Daniel left the house to pick up Noah.

He locked the front door.

He locked the back door.

He assumed the side gate did not matter because it was attached to the fence and led only into the backyard.

While he was gone, Karen walked down the sidewalk carrying a folded paper bag.

She did not look around.

That was the first sign that she had already decided to cross the line.

The second sign was the way she walked directly toward Daniel's side gate.

The latch was simple.

She lifted it.

The gate opened.

Karen entered the yard.

She moved toward the side door, tried the handle, and discovered that it had not locked completely behind Daniel that morning.

She opened it.

Inside, the house was silent.

Karen stood still for several seconds.

Then she closed the door behind herself.

The hall closet was exactly where she remembered it.

She opened the door.

There it was.

The PS5 box looked even more expensive in the quiet hallway.

Karen stared at it.

“This is ridiculous,” she whispered.

She picked it up.

It was heavier than she expected.

For the first time, her confidence faltered.

She could put it back.

She could leave.

Instead, she carried it toward the side entrance.

Her breathing became faster.

She placed the console in the paper bag and tucked a dish towel over the top.

Then she heard a car door outside.

Karen froze.

She moved toward the side door and looked through the glass.

A neighbor was unloading groceries two houses away.

Karen waited.

The neighbor looked down at his phone.

She stepped outside.

She closed the door.

Then she walked calmly through the backyard gate as though she had every right to be there.

Ten minutes later, Daniel arrived home with Noah.

Noah was talking before he had even entered the house.

“Dad, I swear this year went by so fast.”

Daniel laughed. “You said the exact opposite in March.”

They walked inside.

Noah dropped his backpack.

Daniel waited for the moment.

“Okay,” he said. “Go to the closet.”

Noah opened the door.

He stared.

The closet was empty.

For several seconds he did not speak.

Then he turned.

“Dad?”

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“What?”

“The box is gone.”

Daniel stared into the closet.

He knew immediately that this was not an accident.

He checked the other rooms.

Nothing.

He checked the trash.

Nothing.

Noah's face fell.

“Did you move it?”

“No.”

“Did Mom take it?”

“No.”

Daniel felt his anger become cold.

Then he remembered Karen standing in his hallway.

He remembered her looking at the closet.

He remembered the way she had said the word safety.

He went to the security camera app on his phone.

He had installed one camera above the side door after a package had been stolen the year before.

Daniel opened the footage.

The first clip showed himself leaving.

The second showed an empty yard.

Then the image changed.

Karen appeared.

She entered the yard.

She opened the side door.

She disappeared inside.

Six minutes later, she emerged carrying a large paper bag.

Noah leaned toward the phone.

“Is that Karen?”

Daniel did not answer.

The next clip showed Karen walking away.

Noah looked at his father.

“She stole it.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I think she did.”

Noah's eyes filled with disappointment.

“It was supposed to be my reward.”

Daniel put a hand on his son's shoulder.

“I know.”

Noah looked back at the screen.

“Are you going to get it back?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Outside, a car door slammed in the distance.

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

Karen had been gone for less than an hour.

He picked up his phone and stood.

This was no longer a neighborhood annoyance.

Someone had entered his home and stolen something that did not belong to them.

And he had video proof.

After dinner, Noah went upstairs to finish a homework assignment he had nearly forgotten. Daniel stood in the kitchen washing two plates, trying to think of a way to make the evening normal. He considered telling Noah the surprise was delayed. Then he realized that would be another lie forced by someone else's actions. Instead, he decided to tell his son everything when the time was right. The camera footage sat on his phone like a silent witness. Daniel saved a copy to his computer and another to a cloud folder. He did not know what legal steps would follow, but he knew the story needed to remain factual. For once, the simplest thing was also the strongest: the console had belonged to his family, Karen had entered without permission, and the camera had captured what happened.

The next hour passed slowly. Noah sat in his room while Daniel called Marcus and described what the camera showed. Marcus listened without interrupting, then asked Daniel to save every clip. Together they made copies and wrote down the times. It felt strangely formal for something that had begun as a child's reward, but Daniel knew that accurate details mattered. When Noah eventually came downstairs, he did not ask whether the PS5 had magically returned. He simply asked, “What happens now?” Daniel told him that they would ask Karen for it back and that he would not let the argument become Noah's burden. Noah nodded. He was disappointed, but he trusted his father. That trust gave Daniel a new kind of urgency. Karen might have stolen a console, but she would not be allowed to steal the lesson Daniel wanted his son to learn about keeping promises and standing up for himself without becoming cruel.

Daniel did not confront Karen immediately.

He knew he was angry, and he also knew anger could turn a clear situation into a messy one. He wanted the facts. He wanted the footage saved. He wanted Noah away from the argument.

So he sent Noah to his room and called his friend Marcus, who lived three streets away.

“I need you to watch something,” Daniel said.

Marcus came over twenty minutes later.

They watched the camera footage twice.

There was no ambiguity.

Karen entered through the side door. She walked directly toward the hall closet. She removed the PS5. She put it into a bag. She left.

Marcus leaned back.

“Well,” he said, “that is about as clear as evidence gets.”

Daniel nodded.

“I'm going over there.”

Marcus stood. “I'll come with you.”

“No. Stay here with Noah.”

Daniel walked across the street.

Karen's car was parked in the driveway.

He knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

Finally, Karen opened the door.

She had removed her sunglasses. Her expression was annoyed rather than nervous.

“What is it?”

Daniel held up his phone.

“You took something from my house.”

Karen blinked.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.”

“You entered through my side door at 1:30 this afternoon.”

“I did not.”

“I have video.”

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Video can be misleading,” she said.

“It shows you carrying the PS5 I bought for my son.”

Karen folded her arms.

“You're accusing me of stealing?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“You need to be careful with that word.”

Daniel held his phone toward her.

“Give it back.”

Karen looked at the screen.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she stepped onto her porch.

“You left a valuable item unsecured.”
