"Do you think this is funny?"

"No."

"Then leave."

Caleb reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

Vanessa smiled.

"Calling a friend?"

Caleb dialed a number.

"Who are you calling?"

He did not answer.

She laughed.

"Go ahead. Call whoever you want."

Caleb waited.

The call connected.

He said only six words.

"This is Caleb Brooks. Begin immediately."

He ended the call.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"That's it?"

Caleb slipped the phone into his pocket.

"That's it."

She laughed loudly.

"Everyone, did you hear that?"

No one laughed with her.

Caleb looked around the floor.

Then he looked at Clare.

"You don't need to apologize."

Clare stared at him.

Vanessa's smile faded.

"Security is coming."

"I know."

"You'll be escorted out."

Caleb nodded.

"I know."

She stepped closer.

"And when you're gone, don't come back."

Caleb looked at her.

"I don't think that's going to be your decision."

At that exact moment, every executive access screen on the floor changed.

A red notification appeared.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE REVIEW — ACTIVE

Employees stared.

Vanessa's phone buzzed.

Then buzzed again.

Then again.

She pulled it out.

The first message was from Human Resources.

Do not delete, alter, or move any company records.

The second was from Legal.

We need you in a secure meeting immediately.

The third came from the regional president.

Do not contact anyone outside approved channels.

Vanessa's face went pale.

She looked at Caleb.

He was standing quietly.

The elevator doors opened.

Not security officers.

Three people stepped out.

A senior corporate attorney.

A compliance director.

And the company's chief internal investigator.

The compliance director looked directly at Caleb.

"Mr. Brooks."

Caleb nodded.

"You're here."

"Yes."

Vanessa stared.

"You know him?"

The investigator answered.

"We report to him."

The floor went silent.

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The attorney turned toward her.

"Ms. Whitmore, we need your access badge."

Vanessa shook her head.

"What?"

"Your badge."

"Why?"

"Effective immediately, you are suspended pending investigation."

Vanessa looked at Caleb.

"You?"

Caleb said nothing.

The compliance director handed her a document.

She stared at the heading.

SPECIAL EXECUTIVE OVERSIGHT ORDER

Below it was a name.

Caleb Brooks — Chairman's Special Investigator and Acting Director of Corporate Integrity Review.

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

"You lied to me."

Caleb shook his head.

"No."

"Then why didn't you tell me who you were?"

"Because I wanted to see how you treated someone you believed had no power."

Nobody spoke.

Caleb looked at Clare.

Then at Michael's empty desk.

Then at the employees who had spent years being afraid.

"You showed me everything I needed to know."

The Files Nobody Was Supposed to See

The investigation began that afternoon.

Vanessa was escorted into a conference room on the thirty-second floor.

Her laptop was collected.

Her company phone was secured.

Her building access was suspended.

She was instructed not to contact employees involved in the investigation.

She refused to sit.

"This is ridiculous."

The corporate attorney remained calm.

"Please sit down."

"I have worked here for twelve years."

"We know."

"I built this operation."

"We know."

"I've never had a disciplinary complaint."

The attorney looked at the compliance director.

Then back at Vanessa.

"That isn't accurate."

Vanessa's face changed.

"What?"

The compliance director opened a folder.

"We have twenty-three formal complaints."

"Anonymous complaints."

"Some."

"Anonymous complaints aren't evidence."

"No."

He placed another document on the table.

"These aren't anonymous."

Vanessa stared at it.

Names.

Dates.

Descriptions.

Emails.

Meeting notes.

One employee had described being threatened with termination after reporting a safety concern.

Another had documented repeated public humiliation.

A third had reported unexplained schedule changes after refusing to approve overtime.

Vanessa shook her head.

"These people are disgruntled."

The investigator opened another folder.

"Perhaps."

Then he placed a spreadsheet on the table.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

It contained overtime approvals.

Managerial bonuses.

Turnover.

Employee complaints.

Termination dates.

And something else.

Patterns.

Employees who challenged Vanessa were disproportionately placed on undesirable schedules.

Employees who supported her received favorable overtime.

Employees who complained were written up.

Employees who withdrew complaints were given better assignments.

It wasn't one incident.

It was a system.

Vanessa looked at the spreadsheet.

"Where did you get this?"

The investigator smiled faintly.

"Internal records."

"No."

"Yes."

"Those files were restricted."

"Apparently not restricted enough."

Vanessa stood.

"This is a setup."

The door opened.

Caleb walked in.

He carried no folder.

He simply sat down.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You planned this."

Caleb shook his head.

"I didn't plan your behavior."

"You came here pretending to be nobody."

"I came here without a title because I wanted to observe without changing the environment."

"That's manipulation."

"No."

Caleb leaned forward.

"It's an audit."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"An audit?"

"Yes."

"You humiliated me."

"You humiliated yourself."

Her face hardened.

"You think you're better than me?"

"No."

"Then why are you doing this?"

"Because people trusted this company with their careers."

Vanessa said nothing.

Caleb continued.
