The sound reverberated through the massive hall.

Then, absolute, suffocating silence.

Six hundred people stopped breathing. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The only sound was the hum of the air conditioning.

Vance lay on his back on the mat, staring up at the harsh ceiling lights, the breath completely knocked out of his lungs. He was physically uninjured—the mat had caught him, and Maya had deliberately ensured he didn't land on his head—but his mind was entirely short-circuited. He couldn't comprehend what had just happened. He had felt no force, no struggle. He had simply felt a ghost touch him, and the earth had risen up to violently greet him.

Maya stood exactly where she had been, her breathing still slow, deep, and rhythmic. She looked down at Vance, her expression devoid of arrogance, malice, or triumph. It was a look of quiet instruction.

Vance gasped, rolling onto his side, coughing as he tried to force air back into his lungs. His face was scarlet. The humiliation burned hotter than any physical pain. He scrambled to his feet, ignoring the microphone that had skittered across the mat.

He was furious. He had just been humiliated in front of six hundred paying customers by a woman he had mocked.

"You think that's funny?!" Vance snarled, dropping all pretense of a seminar. He fell into a high kickboxing guard, bouncing on his toes. He had lost his temper completely. "You want to go live? Let's go live. Come on!"

A murmur of alarm ripped through the crowd. Several senior instructors stood up, recognizing that the situation had crossed a dangerous line. Vance was actually challenging a volunteer to a real fight.

Maya did not raise her hands. She stood perfectly relaxed, her arms hanging loosely by her sides.

"I am not here to fight you, Mr. Sterling," she said quietly. Though she had no microphone, the absolute silence in the room allowed her voice to carry. "I am here to learn. But you are not teaching."

"I'll teach you right now!" Vance roared. He stepped in and launched a blistering right cross, aiming straight for her jaw. It was a knockout punch, thrown with cruel intent.

Maya moved.

She didn't block the punch. Blocking requires meeting force with force. Instead, she stepped into the attack.

As Vance's fist sailed toward her face, Maya slipped her head to the outside by a fraction of an inch, letting the punch graze the empty air beside her ear. Simultaneously, her left hand snaked up, her fingers lightly catching Vance's wrist. She didn't grab; she adhered to his skin.

With Vance's momentum fully committed to the missed punch, Maya stepped deep behind his lead leg. Her right hand flowed upward, the heel of her palm connecting softly, yet with devastating structural precision, under Vance's chin.

She didn't strike to break his jaw. She used the connection to control his spine.

With her left hand slightly guiding his overextended punching arm downward, and her right hand pushing gently but firmly upward under his chin, she completely broke his posture. His spine arched backward into a painfully compromised position.

Maya sank her weight.

In a movement that looked like a slow-motion dance, Vance was rendered entirely powerless. His center of gravity was destroyed. His feet scrambled uselessly on the mat. With one final, gentle sweep of her leg against his calf, Maya took away his last remaining pillar of support.
