Finally, one of the Chinese businessmen, a man named Daniel Zhou, said quietly in Mandarin:

"Your server speaks very well."

Evelyn smiled.

"Thank you."

Richard noticed.

"What did he say?"

"He complimented my Mandarin."

Richard laughed.

"Of course he did."

The other guests became silent.

Evelyn looked at Richard.

"I'll give you some privacy."

She turned to leave.

"Wait."

She stopped.

Richard lifted his wineglass.

"I have an idea."

Evelyn waited.

"You've been very confident about your Mandarin."

"I know my abilities."

"Then prove them."

Daniel frowned.

"Mr. Vale—"

Richard raised his hand.

"No, no. This is harmless."

He looked around the restaurant.

Several nearby customers had begun listening.

Richard enjoyed an audience.

"I'll give you ten thousand dollars if you can hold a five-minute conversation with Mr. Zhou."

Evelyn blinked.

"Ten thousand?"

"Cash."

Daniel looked irritated.

"This isn't necessary."

Richard ignored him.

"Five minutes. No English."

Evelyn glanced at Daniel.

He gave her a subtle shake of the head.

She understood.

This wasn't really about language.

Richard wanted entertainment.

He wanted to see a woman he considered socially beneath him become nervous.

Evelyn could have walked away.

Instead, she remembered something her mother had once told her.

"Never let another person's arrogance decide how small you become."

Evelyn placed her tray on an empty chair.

"All right."

Richard smiled.

"Excellent."

He reached into his jacket.

But before he could say anything else, Evelyn spoke in Mandarin.

Her voice was calm.

Clear.

Natural.

Daniel's expression changed.

Evelyn didn't translate.

She simply looked at Richard and continued speaking to Daniel.

Daniel answered.

They exchanged several sentences.

Then Evelyn turned toward Richard.

"I believe that is enough."

The restaurant had gone quiet.

Richard stared at her.

"What did you say?"

Evelyn smiled.

"I said the challenge can begin whenever you're ready."

For the first time that evening, Richard Vale had nothing to say.

And Evelyn realized something.

He had made one mistake.

He had assumed she was afraid of him.

She wasn't.

Not anymore.

Richard Vale had built his entire life around one principle:

People respected power.

If you had enough money, enough influence, enough connections, doors opened.

People laughed at your jokes.

People forgave your mistakes.

People listened when you spoke.

Richard had spent decades learning how to control a room.

That was why Evelyn's calmness bothered him.

She wasn't impressed by him.

She wasn't intimidated.

And worst of all, she didn't seem interested in proving anything.

After their initial exchange, Richard changed the rules.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Come to my office."

Evelyn frowned.

"Why?"

"I'll give you the challenge there."

Daniel Zhou interrupted.

"Richard, enough."

Richard looked at him.

"You don't speak for her."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"No. But I know when a business dinner is becoming something else."

The tension at the table became obvious.

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale, if this is about proving that I can speak Mandarin, I have already demonstrated that."

Richard smiled.

"Not to my satisfaction."

"Then nothing I do will satisfy you."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Richard stared at her.

Then he laughed.

"You're bold."

"No," Evelyn replied. "I'm tired."

That answer surprised everyone.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Evelyn picked up her tray.

"Enjoy the rest of your dinner."

She walked away.

But she didn't know that Daniel Zhou had been watching her carefully.

Daniel wasn't simply a businessman.

He was the founder of a technology company based in Shanghai and Seattle. More importantly, he had spent years supporting educational programs for low-income students.

He recognized something in Evelyn that Richard didn't.

Discipline.

The following morning, Evelyn arrived at the restaurant for her shift.

At eleven thirty, the manager called her into his office.

"Evelyn, there's someone here to see you."

"Who?"

Daniel Zhou.

He was standing in the lobby.

Evelyn was surprised.

"Mr. Zhou?"

Daniel smiled.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

"No."

He handed her a small envelope.

Inside was a business card.

"My assistant has arranged an interview for you."
