Victor's jaw tightened.

He pulled out his phone.

“You'll regret this.”

Naomi smiled.

“Maybe.”

Then she walked away.

At home that night, Naomi sat at her kitchen table with the business card in front of her.

Her father was asleep in the next room.

The house was quiet.

Rain tapped against the windows.

She opened her laptop.

She searched Victor Hale.

There were dozens of articles.

Successful developer.

Visionary entrepreneur.

Waterfront redevelopment.

Billion-dollar project.

Philanthropist.

Business leader.

But Naomi kept digging.

She found lawsuits.

Three.

She found a construction company that had quietly dissolved two years earlier.

She found a former partner who had left Victor's company.

She found an environmental consultant who had resigned.

Then she found something strange.

A legal filing.

The filing was connected to a company that Victor had never mentioned.

A holding company.

Naomi leaned closer.

The ownership structure was complicated.

Too complicated.

She started taking notes.

By two in the morning, she had filled three pages.

At three, she found the connection.

Victor's waterfront project wasn't simply a development.

It was part of a financing chain.

If the environmental credit failed, the entire structure could collapse.

And the investors weren't merely risking returns.

They could become responsible for debt they had never been told about.

Naomi leaned back.

Her heart raced.

The bet had changed.

This wasn't about $100,000 anymore.

It was about whether three men were about to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

The next morning, Naomi called Henry Lin.

He answered on the second ring.

“Naomi.”

She smiled.

“You expected my call.”

“I hoped for it.”

“I found something.”

“So did we.”

“What?”

Henry's voice became serious.

“Victor told us last night that you were fired.”

Naomi frowned.

“I wasn't.”

“I know.”

There was a pause.

“That's why we're meeting you.”

“Where?”

“Your restaurant.”

Naomi glanced around.

“When?”

“Today.”

 The Trap

Henry arrived at noon with Michael and David.

Victor arrived ten minutes later.

So did two lawyers.

Naomi stood behind the bar when she saw them enter.

Her manager whispered:

“Should I call security?”

Naomi shook her head.

“No.”

Victor walked directly toward her.

“You've made this bigger than it needed to be.”

Naomi said nothing.

Henry stepped between them.

“Victor.”

Victor turned.

“We have questions.”

“About what?”

“The financing structure.”

Victor smiled.

“My lawyers can answer any questions.”

Henry looked at Naomi.

“Ms. Carter discovered several inconsistencies.”

Victor laughed.

“A waitress?”

Naomi's expression didn't change.

Henry's did.

“You should stop calling her that.”

Victor stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because you're making the mistake of believing her profession defines her intelligence.”

Victor's face hardened.

Henry continued.

“You made that mistake last night.”

Michael placed a folder on the table.

“We had our analysts review the documents.”

Victor looked at the folder.

“What did you find?”

Michael opened it.

“The environmental credit isn't secured.”

Victor's attorney interrupted.

“That is a matter of interpretation.”

Henry looked at him.

“No.”

The lawyer stopped.

“It isn't.”

David opened another document.

“And the debt obligation is significantly higher than what was disclosed.”

Victor's expression changed.

“That's not accurate.”

Henry slid the paper across the table.

“Then explain it.”

Victor looked at the document.

He couldn't.

Naomi watched him carefully.

Then she saw something.

His lawyer leaned toward him and whispered.

Victor nodded.

Naomi understood.

They were going to attack her.

Sure enough, Victor turned.

“You know what I think?”

Naomi waited.

“I think you researched this after last night.”

“Yes.”

“So you admit you weren't qualified to discuss it.”

“No.”

“I think you wanted attention.”

“No.”

“I think you saw an opportunity to embarrass me.”

Naomi shook her head.

“You embarrassed yourself.”

Victor slammed his hand against the table.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

Naomi looked at him.

“Because you tried to humiliate me.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“So this is revenge?”

“No.”

She paused.

“This is accountability.”

The word hung in the room.

Henry nodded.

Victor looked around.

The restaurant had become quiet.

Customers were watching.

Employees were watching.

Even Victor's own lawyers looked uncomfortable.

Naomi reached into her bag.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I found the original environmental filing.”

Victor went pale.

His attorney immediately picked it up.

“Where did you get this?”

“It was public.”

The lawyer scanned the page.

Naomi continued.

“The filing states that the city required additional review because of potential contamination on part of the site.”

Henry looked at Victor.

“Is that true?”

Victor said nothing.

Naomi opened another document.

“And this company?”

She pointed.

“It's connected to the same development.”

Victor's attorney stood.

“This conversation is over.”

Henry shook his head.
