The Challenge

“Get out.”

Naomi Carter froze.

For half a second, the words seemed unreal.

Around her, the restaurant continued moving as though nothing had happened. Silverware clinked against porcelain. Glasses chimed softly. A waiter hurried toward the kitchen carrying three plates balanced on one arm. Somewhere near the bar, a woman laughed.

But at Table Twelve, the atmosphere had changed completely.

Naomi stood perfectly still.

In her right hand was a bottle of expensive Cabernet Sauvignon. In her left was the small black order pad she had carried through six years of waiting tables.

Across from her sat Victor Hale.

Sixty-two years old.

Multi-millionaire.

Real-estate developer.

Owner of several office buildings scattered across San Francisco.

And, according to the local business magazines, one of the city's most influential men.

Victor had the kind of confidence that came from never hearing the word no.

Tonight, he was entertaining three businessmen visiting from Shanghai.

The dinner was supposed to be important.

Very important.

The three men were considering investing in one of Victor's largest projects yet—a waterfront technology and residential complex that would cost nearly a billion dollars to complete.

Victor had spent the first hour trying to convince them that investing with him was inevitable.

He talked about his private aircraft.

His Napa estate.

His yacht.

His connections with city officials.

He even pointed toward the windows and casually mentioned that the glass tower across the street belonged to him.

His guests had listened politely.

But Naomi had noticed something Victor hadn't.

They weren't impressed.

They were studying him.

Listening.

Comparing his words with one another.

Naomi had learned to recognize that look over years of serving wealthy clients.

Rich people often spoke differently when they were genuinely interested in something.

These men weren't.

They were skeptical.

But Naomi was a waitress.

Her job wasn't to offer opinions.

Her job was to refill glasses.

Take orders.

Deliver food.

Smile.

Disappear.

So she had said nothing.

Until Victor decided to humiliate her.

“I said get out,” he repeated.

Naomi carefully placed the wine bottle on the table.

“Sir?”

Victor sighed dramatically.

“I requested someone else.”

“I can ask the floor manager to reassign your table.”

“No.”

His eyes traveled over her uniform.

“I don't want another server.”

Naomi waited.

“I want someone competent.”

One of the businessmen lowered his eyes.

Another shifted uncomfortably.

Naomi felt heat rising beneath her collar.

She had heard insults before.

Being a waitress in an expensive restaurant meant learning how to survive the arrogance of people who believed money made them superior.

Once, a customer had snapped his fingers at her.

Another had complained that she didn't smile enough.

A third had asked whether she was “really” educated.

Naomi had learned to absorb such comments.

But Victor's insult felt different.

It wasn't about her service.

It was about who he had decided she was.

“You've been taking care of our table all evening,” Henry Lin said quietly.

Naomi glanced toward him.

Henry was the oldest of Victor's three guests.

Silver hair.

Thin glasses.

Calm expression.

Unlike Victor, he had barely spoken.

Victor ignored him.

“I need someone who speaks Mandarin.”

Naomi answered quietly.

“I do.”

Victor blinked.

Then laughed.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You speak Mandarin?”

“Yes.”

“Fluently?”

“Yes.”

Victor leaned back.

For the first time all evening, he seemed genuinely entertained.

“You don't look like someone who speaks Mandarin.”

Naomi felt something cold settle in her chest.

She had heard variations of that sentence for most of her adult life.

You don't look like a lawyer.

You don't look like a Stanford graduate.

You don't look like someone who belongs here.
